jake didn't understand how to interact with people and placed in a new situation with something unpredictable he really fucked up, he didn't treat hal like a person or an actually sentient being and that's REALLY fucked

and because of the fact that jake Actually Did That, and it was shitty, and it upset Hal and essentially led to the whole "I thought you liked adventure" scenario which had to be shitty for Jake also

honestly tbh my belief is that during that scene jake was like fuck it sucks to be treated like this what the fuck have I been doing and actively tried to treat him better but thats just me

the way that i connect with jake english is because of the fact that he legitimately wants to make people happy and hopeful but isn't very good at the people part of that sometimes and screws up

I connect myself to jake because I like to try to be the voice of optimism amongst bad situations

and I recognize jake treated hal shitty

so i actively support hal strider and ppl who kin him and I understand that the person I connect to did you dirty and I'm so so sorry that that happened to you
