nine year old sammy stops eating with the hopes that making himself sick will warrant his father's care. john just dismisses it as bratty child antics, but dean gets worried when sam starts losing weight.
after many many tries he finds a way to make sam eat. every meal they're not accompanied by their father, thirteen year old dean sits sam on his lap and spoon feeds him until the plate is clear. he mutters soft reassurances like dean remembers mary did with him and he kisses sam's hair as a reward when they're finished.
sometimes it doesn't work if sam is mad at dean or john, but sometimes sam crawls on his lap like he's been waiting all day.
eventually they both grow out of it and sam has to manage meal times alone. he half recovers, with relapses during stressful times, but he never asks dean for help again.
many years later, during the trials, sam is too big to sit on dean's lap, but dean grabs him anyway. he fits sammy against him and feeds him chicken soup. he runs his hand through sam's hair and wipes his face with his own hand when a little of liquid spills.
