This post is about the world famous Oliver R. Smoot, American National Standards Institute (ANSI) chairman and president of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The story goes as follows. October 1958. Harvard Bridge. Oliver R. Smoot, a young new student of MIT ravishing to be member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. A chilly morning... or not, we have not been there... maybe it was in the afternoon... well that doesn't matter.

That day, Oliver laid down and got up repeatedly in order that his companions could mark his position in chalk. The final goal: to measure the length of the bridge on this new and nonstandard unit of length, the smoot (the oliver for his friends.)

The bridge's length was measured to be 364.4 smoots (620.1 m) plus or minus one ear, that's the result of this fraternity prank. So 1 smoot equals to 5.7 feet (1.70 meters, for the non imperial guys).

And here it ends the well-known legend of a man who measured 0.46 Shaquille O'Neals and 6.88 human tongues, plus or minus one ear, and stablished a new standard for our weird conversions.
