The Hoodie I Packed Without Thinking
Packing for a short trip is always a strange mix of planning and guesswork. You think about the weather, how long you’ll be gone, and whether you’ll actually need half the things you put in your bag. Most of the time, though, the packing happens quickly—just grabbing what feels familiar before heading out the door.
That’s exactly how that hoodie ended up in my backpack.
I was getting ready to leave campus for a quick weekend trip. Nothing big, just a short break before things got busy again. My bag sat open on the bed while I tossed in the usual things: a pair of jeans, a notebook, a charger I almost forgot, and a few things I probably wouldn’t end up using.
Right before zipping the bag, I noticed the hoodie hanging on the back of my chair. Without really thinking about it, I folded it and placed it on top of everything else.
At the time, it felt like a random decision.
But later that evening, when the air turned colder than expected, I was glad it was there. We ended up walking around longer than planned—exploring quiet streets, stopping for late coffee, and talking about everything that had happened during the semester.
That hoodie turned out to be the one thing I kept reaching for the entire trip. On the bus ride, during the evening walks, even while sitting outside when the wind picked up a little.
It wasn’t anything complicated. Just a simple everyday hoodie that somehow becomes the first thing you grab when comfort matters most.
Sometimes the things we pack without thinking become the most useful things we bring along.
By the time I got back to campus, the hoodie went right back to its usual spot on the chair. Ready for another busy week, another cold morning, or maybe another unexpected trip.
Looking back, it’s funny how the small choices—like grabbing something familiar before leaving—can quietly become part of the memories you take with you.
