Ā Ā Iām a 25-year-old woman, iāmĀ 5ā²2ā²ā and I donāt particularly write about fashion or even talk about my experiences shopping, but this was a day that was supposed to be very special and it almost end up with me in tears!
Ā Ā Moving on.. Iām overweight. I'veĀ been my whole life and Iāve always had issues with it, Iāve always feared what people think of me just because of the way I look. Iām currently between a size 16/14 UK (thatās 14/12 US or 44/42 EU, etc), but I have to admit there was a time I wore a size 22 UK. Yes, itās true, Iāve dropped some weight, but I still struggle buying clothes. Iāve always hated shopping because there was nothing I liked that was a plus size! For some reason, I thought wedding dress shopping would be different because there are women of all shapes and sizes and not only skinny/model body type women do get married - oh, how I was wrong!
Ā Ā First I went to the store I was most excited about, I was certain I was going to find my dress there! I explained what sort of dress I had in mind and then I heardĀ āIām so sorry, but the new collection is coming soon, so we donāt have any of the dresses you want, but thereās a few I can show you, we donāt have your size, but itās ok, you can try it, it wonāt close, but youāll get the idea.ā At first, I was like, oh well, bad luck and I tried the dress and it was amazing, I looked in the mirror in front of me and I looked pretty good if I say so myself, but then I looked in the mirror behind me and I could see my whole back, it didnāt close,Ā not even a little! Itās quite disconcerting when youāre trying to find THE Dress but you canāt find any that fits you so you canāt see the proper result! So I went to other stores and it was the same thing all over again, Iād try dresses that were a size 6/8 UK and have the woman with me holding it so I could see more or less how it looked. I only tried 2 dresses that wereĀ sort of my size, only this time they were too big, they were already orderedĀ dresses that their owners would collect.Ā
Ā Ā You see, I went to 5 wedding dress stores and they all told me the sameĀ āWe donāt have that sort of sizes on store, we only order them when someone that size (meaning Fat) chooses it and decides to buy it, then we do alterations if needed.ā And I looked at them incredulously, and thought how women that wear bigger sizes are supposed to choose their wedding dresses, without trying a proper dress that fits them perfectly?! Yes, I understand youāre giving me a size 8 dress to try on, and youāre going to hold it so I can see how it will look, but... IS IT REALLY GOING TO LOOK LIKE THAT? Or am I going to spend 1500Ā£ and then look awful on my wedding day?! Iām sorry, but itās a huge risk to buy things like that, might as well buy my wedding dress online!!! Thatās what I wanted to shout at the top of my lungs and tell all of them!
Ā Ā Finally, the last store I went didnāt have plus size dresses either, they had a couple, but not what I was looking for and yes Iām guilty... I tried a size 10 wedding dress and fell in love with it, even though it wasnāt my size, but apparently, thatās how, we, plus size women, have to do wedding dress shopping. Letās hope when it arrives on my size it will still look good! I am TERRIFIED!!
Ā Ā All I have to say it: Dear owners of Wedding Dress stores, please think of your plus size brides, weāre human being and as surprising as it sounds, no, we donāt want to look ridiculous on our Wedding Day!
