Webtoons Tutorial Converting Images for Webtoons.com
Publishing your comic at webtoon.com is relatively simple, but there are a few things which are nice to know.Â
Keep in mind that Webtoon.com is designed to read comics vertical, so the set up is a bit different from the way you would do with a book format. To upload a comic at Webtoon.com, there are three different formats that you should know:
So when we start, we open a new file with the following settings:
The better the quality is, the easier is the comic to read. When I create my pictures, I make them larger than 800 pixels width. I ususaly create them with approximately 1200 pixels and resize them later. Don't mind about the height of 10.000 pixels (yeah I know that I told you there is a maximum size of 1280 pixels), we will care for that later.
Now, insert your panels!
If your comic is larger than the 10.000 pixels, you can enlarge the canvas every time by using the croptool ('c' on your keyboard).
At the end, save your comic as .PSD file. If your comic is so big that it is saved as .PSB file, you should split your comic into two (or more) pieces like "Full Episode 5a" and "Full Episode 5b" because Photoshop will not "save for web" a very big file - but we need it later. Then save your comic as .JPG because that is the only format that Webtoon.com will accept. Now we will optimize our comic for Webtoons.com. Remember that I told you about the maximum canvas size of 800 x 1280 pixels. Click and hold the croptool and select the slice select tool.
You see a blue frame around your comic. Now do a simple click into your comic and you see the frame color changing to brown. After that click the "divide" panel and a submenu will open. Make sure you choose the following settings:
1000 pixels per slice is the maximum height that photoshop will support. Click "OK" and you will see the slices appearing on your comic. Now select File -> save for web.Â
Choose "JPEG high", "JPEG", "High" and "60" for quality and check "Optimized". Clicking on "Save" will open a new window:
Choose the name of your file, "images only" and "all slices" and then click on "save". Photoshop will save your comic into the choosen slices and will add numbers to the slices so you always know the right order. Yay, well done! The setup for uploading is finished.
After you have created an account on webtoon you can directly start uploading by just clicking on "Publish". Now choose "create a series". You will have to upload a main thumbnail for your comic and to add some more informations like a summary or the genre.
After that you can add your first episode. Upload your episode thumbnail (which has a maximum size of 160 x 151 pixels) and your slices. By press and hold "ctrl" you can select all the slices. Please check after upload if they are in the right order. Almost done! Now can decide if you like to see a preview, to save draft or to publish directly.
Congratulations, you have uploaded a web comic to Webtoons.com!
