Itās the second of March and I am full of soup and ready for bed. But duty calls. Itās time for this monthās prompt.
For anyone unfamiliar with this tradition, every month on the second I post a visual prompt that any and all are welcome to respond to. I also share my own short writing in response to the image. If you want to participate feel free to tag any posts with #wch20 or tag me directly.
MY RESPONSE
(under the cut)
The water tugs at her hand as it trails over the side of the boat. As she drifts between islands, letting the familiar currents and tides do most of the work, she keeps a keen eye out for other craft.
Her motherās old cast net lies at her feet, still damp and glistening in the mid-afternoon sun. The fish sheād caught lie in her belly. A warm temptation, to pull up on one of the passing beaches and to doze under a tree, washes over her. She flicks salty water into her face. Sits upright. Slowly scans what can be seen of the horizon.
An old white house peers out through the cap of trees on its island. The old captain lives there, and she visits once a week to make sure thereās enough food and to do any repairs. Today is not that day.
Splashing by the bow draws her eye. A flash of fin. A writhing tentacle, too big for comfort. Stories of creatures lurking in the channels between the larger islands had scared her as a child, and even now her skin crawls.
She decides to use the engine for the final stretch home.
Rounding the final headland she approaches her own jetty with relief. An unfamiliar boat comes into sight as sheās tying up, and she pauses to watch until itās passed. A final knot of tension relaxes as they disappear behind an outcropping on rocks.
It takes a moment to call up the protective spells over the jetty, and the effort leaves her dizzy. But the spells keep them safe, so theyāre worth it.

wchwriter replied to your post āDoes anyone know of any software or websites or anything that you can...ā
GIMP is a great (free) downloadable program for image editing - that is, if you wanna draw it yourself. Cartographers guild has a heap of tutorials for using GIMP, for varied skill levels. Aside from that, I've seen people use something called Inkarnate (I think) but I'm unfamiliar with that one. My understanding is that it involves less actual drawing. Hope that helps! :D
Thank you! I canāt believe I never thought of GIMP before! But I just found a totally awesome tutorial that will work great!
@wchwriter replied to this worldbuilding post with:
:D Youāve mentioned this in passing before, but Iām glad to have the full explanation. I hadnāt realised that the shadow/light creatures were the same as the muses, but it totally makes sense! And I love that Etri believes in the muses! Does Sol?
That makes me so happy that it makes sense! There are a lot more types of elementals in Concordiaās history than Montglaceās, but yeah, they do overlap some! Concordia has 9 Muses and each of them was a different species/kind of elemental. The Muse of glasswork was a light elemental, but not a type that Montglace has a lot of dealings with. (Basically she was one of the people elementals, not the easily-controlled creature ones.) The Muse of illustration is a little more complicated to explain because that one is very old and existed before the light and shadow places/worlds split into two. Montglace sees him as a minor deity of shadow, but heās so much more than what they think he is. (Well, I mean, in terms of them not really knowing what he is. Heās only a deity because thatās what they call him. Heās just a incredibly ancient elemental.) Notice that I said āwasā about the first Muse and āisā about the second. Chiaroscuro is still kicking and becomes relevant later in these books. ;) This is probably clear as mud, so if you want me to explain more, let me know!Ā
As for Sol, I donāt think heās sure if he believes in them or not. He listens to Etri because he knows Etriās smart and knows things, and Sol has seen elementals (not to the extent that Etri has, but at least from a distance), but I think since heās never seen the Muses, he isnāt sure if he believes. With a little more proof of their existence, Iām positive heād jump on board with Etri. Then again, Solās convinced that he can talk to Adairās cat, so who knows whatās going on inside his head at any given moment lol.

I was tagged by the lovely @lady-redshield-writes, thanks hon! <3
1. Whatās your writing ācomfort zone?ā
My comfort zone is writing existential dialogue with increasingly unnecessary swearing and tangential comparisons.Ā Unless thereās a random 400 word section where Iām comparing the sob of a characterās words to a fucking cloud, then itās not really my comfort zone.Ā
2. What is the oldest WIP that youāre still working on? How has it changed since you first started it?
The oldest is Red Rum, which is a fan-fiction I started in... 2014?Ā Iāve never posted it anywhere so I donāt feel bad about dragging it out.Ā Itās basically a guilty pleasure project that I go to when I have writerās block.Ā The basic premise has always been the same-- impossible to catch serial killer Shadow meets his equal in some sort of detective/consultant/officer Vio, an odd affair of murderous games ensue, horrible drama and gay sex abound... but the specifics have changed so many times that Iāve lost count.Ā
3. Whatās your go-to way of staying motivated?
I remind myself that I canāt be a published author if I donāt, ya know, actually write something to publish.Ā Usually thatās enough to make me put down a few sentences.Ā
4. What are your outlining methods? Do you outline at all, and if so, in what format and in how much detail?Ā
I usually outline as I go.Ā I have the basic skeleton of a plot in my head, but everything else I sort of just wing?Ā So I use my outline to keep track of the scenes Iāve started writing or intend to write, and it fills out as I go.Ā I outline in a numbered list (supposedly chronological) and each sceneās outline involves listing the POV, all characters, and a one paragraph synopsis of the scene.
5. What got you started writing? How long ago was it?
I started in the first grade, so... 12 years ago?Ā I started because my teacher had, like,Ā āwriterās workshopā or something in the afternoons where we got to make our own cheap picture books--like, you know, write two sentences on a page, draw a picture on the top half of the page, hole punch a handful together and slap some cardstock on either side for a book cover.Ā I loved it.Ā I was a bookworm growing up (way more than I am now, though reading is still my favorite hobby) and saw writing as a way toĀ āgive backā to the world for all the great things I got to read, so I stuck with it.Ā
6. What book or author has been the greatest inspiration or influence on your life?
Probably J.R.R.Tolkien, if just because of how influential LotR is in modern fantasy.Ā I grew up reading LotR with my dad so Iād say itās also been pretty influential in my taste in books and my love for world-building.
7. What are your future plans for writing?
Iām planning on publishing someday, preferably with a publishing house and all the crap that entails (I donāt feel Iād be successful as a self-publisher).Ā Iām hoping EosophobiaĀ can be my debut novel but itās in very early stages of drafting, so itās too soon to tell.Ā
8. Is writing your main goal in life, or is there something more important to you?
Writing has never been my main goal since Iāve always been pursuing something else as a main career (so that was more important), but right now Iām going through an identity crisis and am not sure what that otherĀ ārealā career is going to be.Ā ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
9. Have you ever done NaNoWriMo and would you ever want to (again)?
Yes!Ā Iāve won (won?) NaNo 3 outta the 4 times Iāve done it and love everything about NaNo--except that itās in November (which is usually a busy month for me, school-wise).Ā Iām doing camp NaNo next month (April) and plan on doing the full NaNo again this year :)Ā
10. Do you share your work with anyone? How hesitant are you to share things?
Iām pretty hesitant.Ā I donāt mind sharing lines/paragraphs, but more than, like, 300 words?Ā I dunno... thatās a lot lol.Ā I also prefer sharing online like this than sharing with people I know--I get a lot more stressed about what the person thinks and trying to impress them if I know them, and that doesnāt make for productive sharing.Ā Ā
