She had been reading, and though she could easily feel the waves of Jack’s mood coming from the bedroom, she had tried her very best to ignore it. She couldn’t tune it out, but she didn’t want to intrude either. So unless he came to her, she wouldn’t acknowledge it. The fact that she had been on the same damn page for the last hour had nothing to do with any of it.
When he joined her in the living room, her brow immediately furrowed in concern. He looked horrible, and when he almost collapsed into her lap, she ran her fingers through his hair, the fear washing over her and sending a shiver down her spine. “Shh, it’s okay, my love,” she whispered as his arms wrapped tightly around her waist as though he was trying to keep her from leaving. She would never leave him, especially not like this. But she did unhook his arms so that she could let herself slide onto the floor. “Do you want me to make it better?” She whispered as she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into her lap again, into a tight hug, a hand in his hair, rubbing circles against his scalp in an attempt to calm him down. “It’s gonna be fine, I’m here, I love you. I love you so much. I’d never let anything happen to you.”
