Idk what art history you’d wanna talk about so, dealer’s choice! Cool art history pls!
i am going to talk to you about caravaggio and why he's my favorite old master. caravaggio was a master of the baroque period who loved using dramatic lighting (intense shadows), composition, and struggle/conflict as artistic themes. when people say "this looks like a renaissance painting" as a joke 90% of the time they actually mean a baroque painting
(boy with a basket of fruit, 1593), (the lute player, 1596)
caravaggio was gay and freaky and also apparently easy to ragebait so he got into fights a lot which wasn't super productive considering his career needed him to have good relationships with clients and not to be in jail. but he ended up in jail a bunch. in 1606 he killed some rich guy and the local police finally had enough with him and sentenced him to essentially "if you see this dude on the street you can behead him and get paid" which made him go a bit crazy. so he ran away and started making a bunch of work about getting beheaded
(david with the head of goliath, 1607), (david with the head of goliath, 1610, the face in this is actually caravaggio's self portrait), (salome with the head of john the baptist, 1607), (the beheading of saint john the baptist, 1608)
in 1610 caravaggio got on a boat to try and ask the pope for a pardon but he died on the way when he was 38 years old. i love him not just because he changed the way people see religious figures and imbue paintings with emotion but also because you can see how he let his life influence his work. he was dramatic and crazy and maybe wasn't the happiest person all the time so his work reflects the somberness and strife he faced. and yet its all so beautiful
(saint francisic of assisi in ecstasy, 1595, his first religious painting), (the martyrdom of saint ursula, 1610, his last painting), (the calling of saint matthew, 1600, my favorite painting of his), (the incredulity of saint thomas, 1602, also one of my favorites)
