i was so excited to read book 19. it was the book i was anticipating the most. (i mean its the literal climax to the entire season so yeah duh) but tbh i was exicted to read cause it had been so long to see wolf and snake had properly interacted and i knew and the drama and tension was gonna go crazy between them so i drew this sort of alt cover b4 i read it.

ok but fr, finally i drew this before i read the final book. i really loved this series and it really inspired me artistically so i made this as a small reminder of where it all began before the last ride <3

Scarlett’s broom swung through the air with terrifying precision, each strike missing its target by mere inches. The irony wasn’t lost on them—four former master thieves, now secret agents, running for their lives from a thirteen-year-old girl armed with household cleaning supplies.

“I swear to GOD, if you idiots don’t stop hiding—” Scarlett’s face was red, her voice cracking between fury and something else—relief?

“Scarlett, please,” Wolf wheezed, narrowly ducking under another swing as he skidded behind the couch. “We can explain!”

“You died!” she shrieked. “I mourned you! All of you! And now I find out it was fake?!”

Across the room, Dianne leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, biting her lip to stifle a laugh. She hadn’t seen this much chaos outside of an active crime scene.

Piranha, half-hidden behind the curtains, whimpered. “Miss Dianne, help.”

Dianne only smirked. “You dug this grave. Lie in it.”

One by one, the crew made their excuses.

“Uh, I think I left Shark’s fishtank running—”

“Snake texted me? Yeah. Definitely texted me.”

“I have to go.”

With a final, unimpressed glare from Scarlett, the room emptied—all except for Wolf, who stood frozen, ears flat against his skull.

Dianne gave him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder before slipping out, closing the door behind her.

Silence.

Wolf exhaled. “So.”

Scarlett huffed, tossing the broom aside. It clattered to the ground, but she didn’t care. “So.”

Talking was harder than outrunning an army of mind-controlled hamsters. Harder than scaling a rocket mid-flight.

Wolf rubbed the back of his neck. “Look, I—”

“Why?” Scarlett blurted.

He blinked. “Why what?”

“Why did you do that? Fake your deaths? Let me think—let everyone think—” Her voice cracked again, but this time, there were tears.

Wolf winced. “We had to. The world needed the Bad Guys to disappear so we could work undercover.” He hesitated. “But that’s not what you’re really asking, is it?”

Scarlett crossed her arms, looking away.

Wolf sighed. “Scarlett… I’m sorry.”

A beat. Then, quieter: “For the faking your death thing, or the almost killing me thing?”

The question punched through him like a knife. His shoulders hunched. “Both.”

She frowned.

Wolf swallowed. “I had nightmares,” he admitted, staring at the floor. “For a year. You—dying. Me, losing control again. Becoming a monster.” His claws flexed. “After what I did to you, I thought… maybe I deserved them.”

Scarlett’s expression shifted—anger, confusion, then something softer. “…You idiot.”

Wolf blinked.

She stepped forward. “I wasn’t trying to protect Marmalade. I was trying to save you.”

His breath hitched.

“If you’d killed him,” she pressed, “what would everyone have seen?”

The answer was obvious. A monster.

Wolf’s ears pinned back. “But I hurt you.” His voice was raw. “That didn’t change anything.”

Scarlett hesitated, then—

She threw her arms around him.

Wolf stiffened. The only other hugs he’d ever had were from the crew and Dianne—awkward, fleeting things. But this? This was tight.

“…Scarlett?”

“Shut up,” she mumbled into his fur.

Slowly, he hugged back.

Then Scarlett’s grip shifted. Her fingers brushed against his wrists—and she froze.

Wolf tensed.

She pulled back just enough to look, her fingers tracing the jagged, faded scars circling his wrists.

“Where did these come from?” she asked, voice hushed.

Wolf’s ears flattened. “…Prison.”

She frowned.

“They—uh.” He swallowed. “They chained me up. My ankles too.” Hesitantly, he tugged his pant leg up, revealing identical marks around his ankles.

Scarlett’s breath caught.

Wolf braced for it—anger, disgust.

Instead, sorrow.

“…Did they do this to the others?” she whispered.

He shook his head.

They both knew why. Because of what he did to her.

Scarlett’s hands curled into fists. “You didn’t deserve that.”

Wolf barked a laugh—hollow, bitter. “Scarlett, they saw me almost murder you. What were they supposed to do?”

She opened her mouth—then stopped. Because he was right. If it’d been anyone else, she wouldn’t have argued.

But it wasn’t anyone else.

Scarlett grabbed his wrists. “Listen to me. You’re not a monster.”

Wolf’s chest tightened.

She glared. “And if I ever meet whoever did this to you, they’re gonna wish you were.”

A beat. Then—

Wolf choked out a laugh—real this time. “Kid, you’re terrifying.”

Scarlett smirked. “Damn right.”

And just like that, something inside him—something he’d carried for a year—finally, finally loosened.
