Water hemlock - Cicuta maculata is extremely poisonous and is considered one of the deadliest plants in North America, containing a powerful toxin called cicutoxin that affects the central nervous system.
Toxicity and Danger Toxic Parts: All parts of the plant are poisonous, with the highest concentration of toxins found in the underground tuber roots.
Onset: Symptoms typically begin rapidly, often within 15 to 60 minutes after ingestion.
High Risk: Ingesting even small amounts of the plant is hazardous to humans and livestock. Symptoms of Poisoning Early Signs: Nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, excessive salivation, and weakness. Severe Signs: Severe seizures, tremors, respiratory distress, and loss of consciousness.
Outcome: Exposure can be fatal without immediate emergency medical intervention. If you suspect someone or an animal has ingested water hemlock, call 911 or your local poison control center immediately.
