In humans, cicutoxin rapidly produces symptoms of nausea 🤢 and abdominal pain, typically within 60 minutes of ingestion. This is followed by seizures, tremors, coma and death 💀. This violent toxin causes death by disrupting the central nervous system 🧠. However, because cicutoxin breaks down so rapidly, research on the compound isn’t easy, and scientists are still unsure about the exact mechanism it causes death. It is also unknown how the body gets rid of cicutoxin, as the highly reactive structure of cicutoxin makes it difficult for the body to excrete it. Interestingly, although cicutoxin is a known strong poison, studies show that it possesses antitumour properties, and can be used as a natural drug against leukemia and breast cancer.
