The snow had blanketed the ground more quickly than Jaime anticipated on his journey north. The horrid weather hindered him, his horse managing to survive longer than he’s assumed yet less time than he’d hoped. The rest of the march he made alone on foot, an army of one on his way to honor their promise.
Not half a day from Winterfell left to travel, Jaime found himself spotted and unfortunately recognized by a small group of men. Hunting to stock winter stores before the cold truly grasped the landscape, if the Lannister had to guess. They gave him no chance to explain his presence, alone without an army. Whatever he might claim, why would a word he said matter to them? The blonde made no move to fight them. After all, arriving in Winterfell having potentially murdered their own would certainly not benefit him.
Eventually two of their party departed to Winterfell with Jaime under their watch. The hunt had been going well, and they need not all bring him. What might he do without his hand--they had taken it, which was unnecessary in his opinion--or sword? They needed no more than two. While not the least ideal situation, Jaime had not intended to arrive of anyone else’s volition. Thankfully, not enough time passed as their prisoner to truly be mistreated beyond mocking.
On the way, Jaime’s mind lingered upon Cersei as it had since he departed King’s Landing. Perhaps he never should have left? Did they know what he’d done to their boy? Had Catelyn ever relayed that information before her and Robb’s passing? It vaguely amused him rather than troubled him that he might just have condemned himself to death in deciding to honor his word. The realm certainly never would have expected that.
Would he see Brienne again? Perhaps it would be better not to come in contact, if the circumstances remained how they were or worsened.
As they passed through the gates of Winterfell, someone’s voice rang out into the unforgiving wind despite the intense chill, “They have the Kingslayer!” His shoulders slumped lightly, but he offered no further reaction.
Why had he come? Why in the Seven Hells had he come?
