Sometimes , the people who suffer the most are the kindest. This is the perfect description of Edwin Payne. He spent over 70 years in Hell , enduring the most terrible tortures , being tossed from one demon to another like a toy , only because of a mistake , only due to the cowardice of someone else. Even so, in the darkness , in the long corridors, and in the breathless escapes, he continued to be the sensible boy he was. The first thing he did after escaping from Hell was to keep company with a stranger in his final hours , another proof of his kindness. He spent an eternity of damnation without deserving it, and he used his achieved freedom to do good. Edwin said that he put all of himself into the cases to ask for mercy if he was taken back to Hell , and he's ashamed of it, but he doesn't have to be . His reasons are completely understandable , and this is very telling because if it were only for a selfish reason, he wouldn't get so involved in the cases. Edwin has his beautiful, gentle , and delicate heart hidden beneath the stoic posture resulting from a rigid and affective upbringing . He is a product of an era in which sentimentalism was seen as weakness and shame, where he couldn't be his true self. He made a long journey to accept himself and to understand that there is nothing wrong with him . He's no longer 'Mary Ann' tied to a table with a fighting demon in front of him ; he's Edwin Payne , who cares for his job, for his friends , and fights in his own way with books and wit. Edwin , who puts himself out there to make the difference , understands that their cases matter. He's intelligent , cunning, caring , and funny in a charming way. I'm attached to him because I can relate to the struggle of making friends and the need and love for learning. But his character is more important for the morals he embodies, such as ethics and justice . He's an encouragement to all people who do not accept themselves because he learned to do so without fear , exposing his love in his most vulnerable moments and in the place he hated the most. George Rexstrew has been able to portray this compelling and extraordinary character on screen with his majestic performance and his talent (I'm always surprised by his care in every gesture and his acting in the final episode). We need more characters like Edwin , who have the courage to be simply themselves and to not fear being misunderstood or outcast because the only things and people that matter are the ones we choose .
