"Soft Places to Land"
Title: "Soft Places to Land" : XO, Kitty fanfiction
Pairing: Min Ho x Reader Male
Genre: Fluff | Romance
Warnings: none.
Summary: Min Ho isn’t used to quiet—but somehow, he finds himself drawn to it in you. As your new relationship unfolds, he pulls you out of your shell while you become the only place where he doesn’t have to be loud, proving that love doesn’t have to be overwhelming to be powerful.
The first time Minho noticed you, you were trying very hard not to be noticed at all.
It was almost impressive, actually.
KISS wasn’t exactly the kind of place where people faded into the background—everyone was loud in their own way, whether it was with fashion, friendships, or just sheer presence. And then there was you, tucked into the corner of the common area, shoulders slightly hunched, headphones on, like the world was something you preferred observing from a safe distance.
Minho wouldn’t have looked twice.
Except—you laughed.
Quiet, barely there, like you didn’t mean to let it slip out. But it did. Soft and warm and real.
And somehow, that was louder than anything else in the room.
----
He didn’t approach you right away.
Minho was many things—confident, blunt, occasionally insufferable—but even he didn’t walk up to someone who clearly didn’t want to be bothered. So instead, he watched. Not in a creepy way (he’d argue that if anyone accused him), just… curious.
You spoke when spoken to. You smiled when people included you. You never pushed yourself forward.
The opposite of him.
Which was probably why, one afternoon, he found himself dropping into the seat across from you without asking.
You froze.
Actually froze. Like a deer that had just realized the spotlight had snapped on.
Minho leaned back, arms crossed casually. “You always sit here?”
You blinked at him, startled. “Um… yeah.”
“That’s boring.”
You looked down at your hands. “Sorry.”
He frowned immediately. “Why are you apologizing?”
“I just—” you hesitated, voice quieter now, “—I thought you meant it in a bad way.”
“I did,” he said, then paused. “But not like that.”
That didn’t help.
You shrank a little more into yourself, and Minho felt something unfamiliar tug at him—something that wasn’t annoyance or amusement, but… regret.
So he sighed, softer this time. “I mean, you could sit somewhere else. That’s all.”
“…Oh.”
“You don’t have to hide over here.”
Your fingers tightened slightly around your sleeve. “I’m not hiding.”
Minho tilted his head, studying you. “…You kind of are.”
There was no bite in his voice now. Just honesty.
And for some reason, that made you look up at him.
Really look at him.
“Maybe,” you admitted quietly.
Something shifted.
Minho didn’t smile—not fully—but his expression softened just enough to matter. “Well,” he said, pushing himself up, “you don’t have to. Not all the time.”
And then he walked away like he hadn’t just turned your entire afternoon upside down.
----
After that, he kept showing up.
Not consistently enough to call it a routine, but often enough that you started expecting it. A comment here. A question there. Sometimes he’d sit with you, sometimes he’d just pass by and say something that left you flustered for the next ten minutes.
You never knew what version of Minho you were going to get.
But you started liking all of them.
And slowly—very slowly—you stopped hiding as much.
----
The first time you hung out outside of school, it wasn’t even planned.
It was raining. Not lightly, either—one of those downpours that turned everything gray and loud.
You’d been standing under the small awning near the entrance, debating whether it was worth running through it or just waiting it out, when Minho appeared beside you like he’d been summoned.
“You’re not going to stand here forever, are you?” he asked.
“I might.”
He glanced at you, then at the rain. “Come on.”
Before you could protest, he grabbed your wrist—not rough, not demanding, just… certain—and pulled you out into the storm.
You yelped, immediately trying to shield your face. “Minho—!”
He was laughing.
Actually laughing, head tilted back slightly as the rain soaked through his hair and clothes. “It’s just water!”
“I know that!” you said, breathless, half running to keep up with him. “I just—this is—”
“Fun?”
You stopped arguing.
Because despite everything—despite the cold, the chaos, the way your heart was racing—you felt it too.
Fun.
Minho slowed down eventually, turning to look at you properly. You were drenched, hair sticking to your forehead, eyes wide… but smiling.
Really smiling.
And for a moment, he just stared.
“…There you are,” he murmured.
You blinked. “What?”
“Nothing.”
But it wasn’t nothing.
That was the moment.
----
Dating Minho wasn’t loud.
That surprised everyone.
They expected grand gestures, dramatic declarations, something straight out of a movie. But with you, it was different. Softer. Quieter.
More real.
It had only been a month, and yet it already felt like something steady—something growing in the spaces between your differences.
He was the one who pulled you into the world.
You were the one who gave him a place to rest from it.
----
“You’re overthinking again.”
Minho’s voice broke through your thoughts, and you glanced up from where you were sitting on his bed.
“I’m not,” you said, which immediately gave you away.
He raised an eyebrow. “You are.”
You hesitated, then sighed softly. “…I just don’t get why you like me.”
There it was.
Minho stilled.
Not dramatically. Just enough that the air shifted.
He walked over, stopping in front of you. “What do you mean?”
“I mean…” your gaze dropped to your hands, twisting together nervously, “you’re—you. And I’m just…”
“Careful,” he warned lightly.
You swallowed. “I’m not like you.”
“I know.”
You looked up, surprised.
Minho crouched slightly so he was at your level, his expression steady. “That’s the point.”
Your chest tightened.
“I like that you don’t need attention,” he continued. “I like that you think before you speak. I like that you’re… calm.” A small, almost amused smile tugged at his lips. “Someone has to balance me out.”
A quiet laugh slipped from you. “You’re impossible to balance.”
“Probably,” he admitted. Then, softer, “But you do it anyway.”
You didn’t know what to say to that.
So you didn’t.
Minho seemed fine with that. He always was.
He reached out, brushing a damp strand of hair away from your forehead—a small gesture, gentle in a way that didn’t match the version of him most people knew.
“You don’t have to be loud for me,” he said quietly. “I hear you just fine.”
Your throat tightened.
“…Okay.”
For a second, neither of you moved.
Then you leaned forward—hesitant at first, like you were asking for permission without words—and rested your forehead against his shoulder.
Minho froze.
Only for a second.
Then his hand came up, settling at your waist, pulling you just a little closer.
“Look at you,” he murmurs. “Getting bold.”
You roll your eyes, but there’s a smile hiding there.
“I learned from you.”
He laughs softly.
“Careful,” he says. “You might outdo me.”
You shake your head.
Not likely.
Because Min Ho shines like a spotlight.
And you?
You’re quieter.
Softer.
But somehow—
together—
it works.
