((I’ve been watching RT for a long ass time, and RWBY specifically since the Red Trailer stream at RTX. It has never failed to astound me the double standards fndm set for the main girls verses the bar for every other character in the show. Its been a wild ride watching people bend over backwards to excuse Adam Taurus for being an abusive cunt (including blaming Blake for his actions) or Ironwood’s current trip to antagonist town.
Like, Adam in particular burns me because we have all we need to know about him from his short, from his character song, and all the time that he spent on screen. A horrible thing happened to him, and he took that abuse and decided to externalize it on everyone else. According to his character song, he wants to be lionized as a savoir. He’s not interested in justice for the faunus. He’s interested in having them raise him up as a savior, and interested in putting humans where he was. Adam Taurus is a goddamn murderous cult leader who made himself an infallible godlike figure. The reason he was so fixated on Blake was because she’s a high profile defection from his cult, someone who’s making him look bad.
If he was going to regain any credibility, bringing Blake back into the fold when she resurfaced, or killing her, was the only option. Instead she humiliated him twice, and that was not something his ego could handle. It was only ever going to end one way with him.
RT’s villains are never simplistic. If you dont believe me, go check out Red vs Blue, their ostensible straight comedy that is like 60% dick jokes and saying Fuck a bunch. The MAIN antagonist for 10 seasons turned out to be an old man who was so depressed by the death of his wife that he got thousands killed in a quest to bring her back to life. Its horribly tragic and he’s a very sympathetic villain with a lot of layers to him. Even their silliest of villains is complex.
idk man, rwby has problems, but its a lot better written than people give it credit for. It just requires a little thinking, a lot more than you would expect from a two and a half hour internet show.
