The repetitive experience of Oceanwork is built upon a recognition of dual purposes. The player character is chartered to slowly erase an enormous debt by constantly submerging beneath the waves of an alien planet to find valuable resources. They are given Credits, which are used to buy Equipment that makes further exploration easier, which are used to acquire more Credits, and so on. But what makes the game come together is the slow realization the player makes that there is much more to find in this stretch of ocean than they could have possibly expected, with a bizarre and occult mystery there to draw them in once they have the equipment to find it all.
