Actor JACKSON RATHBONE Talks With FEARSmag.com’s Joseph Mauceri about his role in Saban Films’ WW2 Horror film WARHUNT.
The year is 1945, WW2 rages across Europe. An American plane flies over Germany’s Black Forest. Suddenly, a swarm of crow feathers envelopes the plane, bringing it down. Sergeant Brewer and his squad are interrupted on their mission to locate and rescue the crew from the downed plane by Major Johnson and his trusted specialist, Walsh - an expert tasked with destroying sensitive intel that was aboard the aircraft.
As Walsh and the squad venture deep into the forest near the crash site they soon discover hanged Nazi soldiers and other dead bodies bearing ancient, magical symbols. Their compasses fail, their perceptions twist and the group finds themselves under attack by a powerful, supernatural force. Struggling to survive, they must uncover the shocking truth behind the force before the Nazis and remove all evidence it ever existed, at task that could cost them their lives.

REVIEW: Nazis, the legends and mysteries of the black forest and witches, oh my! Those are just some of the elements that are woven into the plot of Mauro Borrelli’s WARHUNT. Add in three veteran screen actors, breathtaking locations, imaginative art direction and production designs, and what ends up on screen feels like an expensive Universal Pictures monster reboot with much more gravitas. Yes, tons of fun and lots of action.
While we’ve encountered many of these elements, their combination and weaving together in this plot is inventive. The characters are not fully flushed out, but there is an element of familiarity that allows them to be engaging. I enjoyed the mythology of the witches and how that places their legend on the radar of the Nazis and American forces. The interaction between Major Johnson and Walsh is fun. Johnson is a dark Indian Jones character that feels like he might have spent some time at Hogwarts. Walsh is his agent in training, gaining his experience in the field. Sergeant Brewer and his squad feel like a genuine collection of rough-necks and exhibit a nice touch of personality traits/background story that add a genuine feel to the tale. There a bunch of interesting trappings here that could easily spinoff a TV series or comic series, or both.
WARHUNT is shot in fantastic Eastern European forest locations. The film nicely blends practical effects and visual effects. The period costumes are great and the ones for the witches terrific. The cinematography adds a fairy tale, dream-like feel to the film. The editing sustains a high energy level and keeps the story moving at a nice pace. I liked Tao Liu’s score. It enhanced the atmosphere, adding depth to the visuals and amplifying the emotional elements.
The director does a creditworthy job of capturing entertaining performances. It was great watching acting veterans Mickey Rourke and Robert Knepper bring these characters to life on screen. They add a lot of edge and machismo to these war seasoned roles. Jackson Rathbone holds his own among his seasoned cast members and is splendid as Walsh, especially as things move into the realm of the supernatural. As for the rest of the cast, it’s a solid ensemble that effortlessly enchants the viewer into the film’s fantasy realm and takes one on a fun thrill ride.
WARHUNT is an exciting period creature feature. Director/screenwriter Mauro Borrelli has a tremendously talented crew and a seasoned cast that delivers a quality genre film the studios haven’t delivered for sometime. Between the Star Wars franchise and The Marvel Character Universe, it's refreshing to watch a film that is dazzling, different, and with a bit of a gritty edge to it. Nazis, Monsters, and you know there will be blood. However, it wasn’t gratuitous. There are moments where it feels like a contemporary Hammer horror film. While embracing these classic aspects it also has a fresh contemporary feel that provides a wider audience appeal. It’s a fun ride well worth the view. I can’t wait to see what Borrelli might do next.
