As promised, here’s my breakdown of my matches at the Warhammer Open Tacoma where I went 2-6!!
Here’s the first mini I ever painted in front of the life size terminator statue!
So I want to say off the bat that I had a fantastic time and have 0 complaints and was completely blindsided by getting picked for the army Showcase. This is just a breakdown of my games for those curious and my insights, nothing more :)
51-89 loss vs Black Templars
53-83 loss vs Imperial Knights
39-92 loss vs Imperial Knights
60-75 loss vs Tyranids
82-83 loss vs Thousand Sons
95-80 win vs Votann
98-44 win vs Custodes
72-79 loss vs Tyranids
So for game 1 the biggest takeaway was that I had to be far more confident in my deployment. I was nervous about getting tagged in close combat and was not nearly aggressive enough with my infiltrators and as a result, my opponent dropped 4 drop pods in the midfield because I gave him enough room and I was trapped in my deployment zone for most of the game 🥲 Completely my fault there
Games 2 and 3 were my first games against knights and OOF that was a rough matchup. My list just did not have the firepower needed to kill those knights and it really showed off some of the weaknesses of the Stormsurge. Its weapons are just too diverse to be truly effective against big targets like I needed it to be. These games were where the use of the Experimental Ammunition stratagem first really started to click with me over the Threat Assessment Analyzer Stratagem however. The extra pip of AP does SO much work, though the Threat Assessment Analyzer does have some niche uses where I can fish for 6s that I’ll discuss later
Game 4 was the first game where I didn’t feel on the back foot. It was against the subterranean Tyranid detachment but was much more of a monster mash list. I did way better with my deployment and screening and it came down to not having enough big guns for all the big bugs. Also my Stormsurge did WORK this game and I genuinely enjoyed fielding it. Plus my opponent Ari and I bonded over his metal raveners and my metal Vespid and overall it was a great game.
(Forgot to take any pictures of this game, sorry 😅)
Game 5 was the closest game of the tournament and one of the tightest games I’ve ever fought (82-83 final score). Nikki’s thousand sons were a real challenge to battle and I’m hopeful that she and I can play again soon as she’s another local!
Fun moment where binoculars pathfinder realized his imminent doom was on the other side of the door
Game 6 was my first win of the tournament and it was against the most incredibly painted army I’ve ever fought. Mike’s Cyberpunk Votann were a joy to fight against and both of us were in the showcase afterwards so I got a lot of good pictures of his army. Highlight of the match for me was my Riptide charging his Squig-Saggitar and finishing it off in close combat.
I’ve reached my photo limit for this post, so I’m going to have to make a part two covering the last 2 games, the showcase, and my final thoughts and takeaways. Thanks for reading this far!!
They should have named the new Great Unclean One the Scale Creep. (Ba-dum-pish) Just look at those adorable little guys from 2nd and 3rd editions! Photo credit to: https://www.youtube.com/user/VigiliaMortis
