I haven’t seen a post about this yet on tumblr, so here’s the deal. The other day, a new piece of malware started finding its way onto computers. It’s a “worm”, which means you don’t need to download any software or click any links to get infected. You only need to be connected to the Internet to be infected. This worm has already destroyed hospital infrastructure and countless computers.

“How can I prevent this from happening to me?”

Update your Windows version to the latest version of Windows. The worm uses a backdoor used by the NSA to gain access to your devices, and the latest Windows 7, 8, and 10 update prevents you from being able to be infected. I, personally am not 100% sure how to prevent Mac and Linux users from being infected. Please do some research on how to stop yourself from getting infected!

“Why should I be worried?”

WannaDecryptor (the name of the worm) has rendered the NHS of England inoperable. It is ransomware, which means that it locks your ENTIRE computer’s data behind a paywall. The ransomware is asking for approx. $300 USD for your data back. Don’t trust this, even if you have the money to pay! There is no guarantee your data will be safe. Your data is pretty much lost forever if you manage to contract this nasty bit of code.

“Will antivirus help?”

Short answer: No. Long answer: There’s about a 30% chance that a completely up-to-date (as of the writing of this post) antivirus will be able to catch this worm and stop it before it happens. That’s less than half and just over a quarter. It’s definitely possible that an antivirus program that’s set to scan constantly and regularly and is 100% up-to-date on its definitions will stop the worm, but you shouldn’t take any chances. Update your Windows!

“What can I do to prevent other users from being infected?”

Reblog this post, send informational links, and absolutely tell every tech-illiterate person to take preventative measures! Old people are HIGHLY susceptible to pretty much any computer security risk. This ransomware could make them think that their computer would be safe if they just paid the money. Inform them that it might not be! Keep them on their toes! Don’t let your loved ones fall prey to this. I, personally, made sure my parents’ laptops were secure.
