The huge house is the old rectory that Daniel Gorsuch had built for his son John, the Doctor of Divinity, Anne and their 10-12 kids. Nice digs! My first fish and chips at the White Lion Pub. Gorsuch Family folks have contributed to the restoration of St Mary’s church so I was especially welcome. Curious connection. Jane Wenham, the last person tried as a witch, was connected to the White Lion Pub. A Jehovah Witness couple gave me a ride back. Transport here is a bit tricky.
10/14/17—Day 6. Dani, my host in Stevenage dropped me in Walkern, a 10 min ride. Narrow twisting country roads with no shoulder. He dropped me at the Anglican Church St Mary’s. This was where an ancestor named John Gorsuch, a Charles l Royalist was vicar from 1632 til he was ejected by Parliament in 1642. He was murdered 10/26/1647, smothered in a Hay mow by Mr. Simon Smeath. His widow, Anne Lovelace, was 36 years old with 10-12 children. My mother was widowed at 36 with 3 girls 10, 7, and 5. I empathize. I walked through Gorsuch’s glebe lands on public trails and walked to the rectory John’s father, Daniel, had built for him. Beautiful fall day, leaves turning, good for wandering around small lanes.
