caught   halfway   in   a   twirl   songbird   stops   her   motions.   blinks   at   him   in   wonder   (   amazed   by   the   simple   things,   as   she   so   often   tends   to   be   )   runs   her   mind   through   all   the   songs   she   knows   by   heart   or   with   fleeting   familiarity.   can't   recall   a   single   one   about   sword   fights.   should   ask   him   for   his   favourite   one   !   should   ask   and   memorize   it   so   that   she   might   sing   it   to   him   one   day   when   he   has   forgotten   ever   teaching   her.   ❝   but   we   could   make   one   !   oh,   oh,   how   about   .   .   .   ❞   presses   a   finger   to   her   cheek   in   contemplation,   tries   to   find   a   word   that   rhymes   with   sword,   but   gives   up   halfway   amid   the   thought.   ❝   raise   your   sword,   because   we're   going   fighting   tonight.   huh   ?!   ❞

ted's hands rise in surrender. nodding in a way that shows he's listening, but not agreeing. " listen roy, i'm sure not trying to step on anyone's toes, but all of us? we're a team. team's help each other out, especially when one member of that team sees something about to go south. " his keeps his tone light, though there's a small air of seriousness. " i'm not doubting your abilities, or nothin', but how about we ease up a bit for the rest of training? give the boys a chance to catch their breath? "

he tries not to slip into what jane half-affectionately calls his preacher thing. he knows dane doesn't like it. he thinks it's fake, mark thinks. dane has a tendency to bring up deep conversations like they're no big deal, and mark has a tendency to turn everything into a deep conversation, and that combination oftentimes leads them here, back to back, mark's head resting where dane's shoulders meet. lydia's not around to listen, but it's easier (easier to form sentences, words, thoughts) when mark doesn't have to look at him. "i don't think you have a role. i don't think anyone does. we can do whatever we want, technically."

"i will." he's been here longer than almost everyone else, long enough to know that everyone who's ever left aged out before they were deemed ready. if that holds true, dane's not due out for another couple years, but still before mark. he doesn't think either of them intend to be here when they turn eighteen, but he tries not to feel the future's feelings before their time. "i miss everyone when they leave. you're all really great people."

“oh! um.” he swears he used to be better at telling when dirk was joking. not perfect, mind you, but good enough, and sometimes he was just playing along when he took dirk literally, because sometimes, when he did that, dirk would make that noise he makes that means he's laughing, and boy, shouldn't that kind of performance have set off alarm bells in fourteen year old jake's noggin? anywho, what he's saying is he's worse at reading dirk's tone now, and he doesn't very much like it. he stretches to give himself an excuse not to speak. if dirk's joking and he agrees, well, that's embarrassing for him, isn't it, and likely to make things even stranger between them than they already were. but if dirk's serious and jake assumes he isn't, they'd just as well shut the entire show down, hadn't they? either way, he risks ruining this tentative what-have-you they have. he tries to tiptoe somewhere in between. “sure!” it's a little too loud, too eager, and he's half-squeaking when he speaks again. “i'd love to take you out. to get you a meal, i mean. can't let my coworker go hungry, can i?”

"i dreamt about you, too." it is interesting, how often they dream about each other on the same night. tino treats this like something ever so interesting, getting one of those knowing stares in his eyes, but gi isn't as convinced. at most, it's a logical side effect of much time they spend with each other. at a push, the more sentimental side of him might state it's a sign that tino thinks about him as much as he thinks about tino, but he think he might die if he tries to say that aloud. he takes tino off speaker and pulls the phone closer, like he's afraid someone might hear his thoughts. "i miss you."
