Arm rings were often used to cement bonds of loyalty between a lord and his warriors in a society where men lived and died by their honor. Ragnar knew how reliable Athelstan was compared to Horik. He did see how the king dealt with Jarl Borg. No wonder Ragnar didn't trust Horik, and he guessed Horik would try to kill Athelstan.
