Unlike today when there is one day to vote with certain states offering the option for early voting, the first election was held from Monday, December 15, 1788, to Saturday, January 10, 1789. The constitution had been ratified earlier that year and stated that the government would be headed by the Confederation Congress, but the country had no executive in charge. Washington, a Federalist ran unopposed, leaving the real decision who would become vice president, as the rules stated the runner-up for president would become VP.
