Confused About Voting Rights Act - Here's Some Help
So news articles and a breakdown post by Cambells-chicken-and-stars that you can read here have helped to clear up at least some of my confusion.
To overly simplify my understanding of the matter: A section of the Voting Rights Act has been removed so that it can be updated. This is (theoretically) supposed to be a way to make the part of the Voting Rights Act about discrimination and voter suppression more up to date. But until Congress actually makes those decisions on the updates and finalizes and then enforces them it has left minorities defenseless. (And holy cow is Congress not known for its speedy decision making.)
And surprise, surprise Texas is leading the charge of taking advantage of this lack of protection from the Voting Rights Act with a Voter ID Law already. (It took you less than a day to do this Texas? Seriously?)
Below is a petition you can sign to show your support, and hopefully tell Congress to hurry the hell up and protect voters.
This morning, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. Now, we have to tell Congress that they must protect every American's right to vote.
