What she thinks: I agree that Elizabeth May made some great points in the debate last week and I agree that she would be a great representative of our generation in parliament but I'm really concerned that Mulcair's faltering and May's strong showing will sway voters and that the liberal vote will be split instead of 2 ways between NDP and Liberal, but instead between Liberal, NDP and also Green, creating a vote too far split into three to even stand up against the conservative vote and although you should be able to vote non-strategically if you want to, you really can't in an electoral system as broken as this if you want to make sure Harper gets the fuck out of Parliament.
what's vote splitting?
Vote splitting is when a large portion of the population votes for several parties and the vote is split between them. In Canada this often occurs between the left wing voters which make up the majority in Canada.
Another segment of the population may have less vote splitting because of only 1 party that they agree with. Conservative voters would only vote for the Conservative Party. Even though they don’t have a ton of support, that support is still more than any 1 other single party:
For example, lets say this is an election result of a riding:
Conservatives: 34%
Liberals: 33%
NDP: 30%
Others: 3%
As you can see, 66% of voters did not vote for the party that won, but that party still won because they had more of the vote Even though the Liberals and NDP were close, these votes were all wasted because the Conservatives got just a bit more than them.
If all these left leaning voters voted mainly for one party, the conservatives could never win (66% or so vs 34%).
This is one of the major problems with FIrst Past the Post, and the effect is compounded when you factor in all seats. Because of vote splitting, in 2011 the Conservatives got an inflated number of seats. They only got 39% of the vote but won 54% of the seats; a false majority.
What is votesplitting?
In Canada there is one predominately right leaning party (The Conservative Party of Canada) and 4 left leaning ones (NDP, Liberals, Bloc Quebecois, Greens) so in an election the left vote is split between all these different parties. Meanwhile all the right leaning voters just vote for 1 party.
Lets say here’s an election result:
Conservatives: 33%
Liberals: 30%
NDP: 32%
Greens: 5%
Although 67% of voters did not vote for the Conservatives their MP got elected, and it doesn’t matter that two of the parties almost had enough votes. Those votes are essentially wasted.
In this way even though a majority of voters did not vote for the Conservatives they can elected because although they hold a minority of the vote, that minority is still more than any one single party.
And that is why we need a new voting system. First Past the Vote regularly through vote splitting elects MP’s that the majority of the public does not support.
