A farmer named Mel Potter would lose 10% of his crop per year due to hail storms before he started using his hail cannon in 1995.
Since 1995, there have been no hail storms in his area.
It cost $1,000 per year to operate and it is still a fraction of the cost when compared to losing 10% of his crop on average.
In theory, it’s suppose to protect farms around the hail cannon up to a radius of half a mile.
March, 2015 - Vortex Cannon
Parts: Can Bandz to hold a trash bag over a plastic trashcan. The large exit hole in the trashcan was made with great violence and inappropriate tools. The knob made of Sculpey by Laura and me, “drilled” with a chopstick, and baked in the oven. A Can Band was threaded through those holes and into two holes we drilled in the trashcan, secured on the outside with paperclips.Â
The vortex thrown was pretty tight so the aim was touchy, but we were able to blow out a candle at distance of 15′ or so without trouble. The first time we did it there was much dancing and celebration!
This took a long time to build because I kept trying to get over-engineered parts. I have a speargun band that no 5 year old on earth could ever draw. I bought a nibbler that doesn’t open wide enough to nibble the trashcan. However, when the time comes to make a huge vortex cannon out of sheetmetal that will be bolted to the floor and drawn by well-muscled adults, I’m ready.
