Did Voltron Queerbait us?
Yes and no
I have no doubt that if the writers were given 100% creative freedom they would have given us a better romance background between Adam and shiro. As it were it's obvious that studio heads (either dreamworks or Netflix) were stressing the creators to not go the romantic route and just be platonic and that most definitely made the subplot suffer.
But what we were given was lackluster despite the restrictions. There was no clear cut indication that these characters were ever romantically involved. And that could have slide if not for the hyping up at SDCC of shiro having this relationship with another man. That's where the hurt comes from that we were promised a character who supposedly had a gay relationship when there was none in the context of the show itself. There was noticing explicitly romantic during and Adam and shiro scene and that hurts.
There could have been ways around this to: having a more romantically charged flashback between Adam and shiro or having shiros mourning have a romantic gesture like a red rose or a ring. Anything that they could have done with ring symbolism, them wearing engagement rings or shiro holding what could have been Adams engagement ring, would have worked so well for a romantic LGBT set up.
Heck the relationship didn't need to be there at all. They could have just implied that shiro had a crush on Adam. That's it. Something that, whether Adam reciprocated his feelings or not, shiro has a crush on his friend Adam.
But they didn't. In context the scene looks like a fallout of a friendship that had no resolution because Adam died. Amd that's why this hurts the community if this is the fabled "LGBT" rep.
about the klance tag thing
*sigh* this all went to shit really quickly. all i can say is, if klance isnāt endgame Iāve lost all my respect for the creators of voltron. and it isnāt even that I want klance, itās the fact t hat they would just be queerbating us. i just hope they arnāt laying an early grave with the fandom. ill still watch the show but loving AND respecting a show is important to me. if i cannot respect a shows creator (aka them not bating me) the show loses some value to me. I truly hope this dosnt happen⦠but things are not looking to bright. anyway have a good evening to anyone who reads this.
@34choco replied to your post āI really donāt understand why they didnāt release the ages before the...ā
Ā there were never official ages, there still aren't specific ages, the point was so that everyone could relate to them Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā they said early on that the ages were around late teens - college age and that the fans could interpret them however they wanted so everybody could feel a connection to the characters, but people lost their goddamn minds looking for something to be problematic and came up with the ages that are now the cause of the neverending shitstorm of discourse Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Hello again! What youāre saying here is exactly my problem with them. The vagueness of the charactersā ages is exactly whatās so frustrating for me. Guess what? You donāt need vague ages for people to relate to characters- people will find ways to relate to them no matter the age. However, by not clearing it up, not only do people feel guilty for shipping people who they thought were āsafeā pairings that are now likely minor/adult pairings (which many people are uncomfortable with for good reasons), those same people receive hate from the people looking for problems. The discourse could have (mostly) been avoided if they had been clear / were ever clear about the ages. Now, everyoneās unhappy. Iām annoyed because I think the creators should take more responsibility for how their media affects their audience. I donāt condone fandom wank, but I am still pissed at this unnecessary bullshit (they should have learned after the first āage gateā and yet...).
@ Voltron Creators
confirm the ages officially you cowards

Voltron creators already fucked everyone over with āage gateā so if you think they wouldnāt Luke & Leia Shiro and Keith then you are wrong
@arhavanna replied to your post: I really donāt understand why they didnāt release...
Ā Ā Well the show just wasnāt made for romantic relationships, so I donāt think they had any issues in their mind with age that might be there if they didnāt release ages. For the story theyāre telling ages donāt matterāand bottom line is the story theyāre telling isnāt a relationshipy one. Ā Ā
Yes, youāre correct, it isnāt a relationship show. However, after the previous āage gateā as I like to call it (when Shiro and Pidgeās ages were released), it should have been clear to the creators that this was going to cause an issue. They should have released the rest of the ages then, rather than wait like six months before doing it again (I wonder if they like this drama because it drums up more exposure for the show?... unsure). Anyways, they know the ships that are popular, they have a responsibility to treat fans respectfully (and fans should, for the love of god, stop harassing people/starting petitions/harassing the creators). Even worse, all of the age bombs have been unofficial, throwaway comments, which creates more confusion and drama. And the ages STILL arenāt on the official site (seriously, cāmon). Ages are also important for other things besides shipping, like knowing your charactersā mental maturity, the true impact of the responsibility they have, important milestones etc. If they think that releasing birthdays officially is important, then, releasing official ages shouldnāt be too hard (I know my charactersā ages before their birthdays because age is an important part of a characterās development). My point is, they didnāt handle this very well, and they continue to handle this badly, and thatās frustrating. Itās not really about the ships at this point for me. Itās about the creatorsā relationship with fans.
I'm also kinda bummed about the "lacking Lance" in season 2, but shouldn't we be thankful for what they gave us? If Lance and Hunk had switched spotlights with Keith and Shiro, wouldn't we all still be complaining? Tbh I feel like they gave us something to hold us over of Lance and Hunk in season 1, and since the show was opened focusing on them, I think we'd be more upset if they showed less Keith and Shiro. Since they're a bit more of "my dad came from space" and "mullet crawled out of the desert," I thought it was nice that they gave us what they did. But I'm still anxiously awaiting what they'll do for season 3 òuó Instead of all this, maybe we should thank the creators, writers, and producers instead for such a good season 2? So THANK YOU, everyone on the Voltron team back in Dreamworks. Thank you for all the hard work you put into making this an amazing season! We're only complaining because you've spoiled us and now we want more ;3
