Great demo on how volcanic ash can damage a jet engine.
Volcanic ash is very abrasive and can:
-Cause rapid erosion and damage to the internal components of the engine with a resultant loss of thrust.
-Cause excessive EGT (exhaust gas temperature--a common way of measuring engine performance) It may become necessary to shut down and then restart engines to prevent exceeding EGT limits. If an engine fails to start, repeated attempts should be made immediately. A successful engine start may not be possible until the aircraft is out of the volcanic ash and the airspeed and altitude are within the airstart envelope.
-Block the pitot system resulting in unreliable airspeed indications.
-Cause all the windshields to become translucent, obstructing vision. On aircraft with autoland capability, a diversion to an airport where autolanding can be made should be considered.
-Cause serious damage to the wing and tail leading edges, surface, landing lights, etc. Erosion damage to the landing lights can significantly reduce landing light effectiveness.
