Hollow Knight: Voidshell custom logo!
Voidshell pale city design ideas. (Credit to whoever took these images. I’m using them as references)
For the record, yeah. The pale city has more similar city features to the citadel, but with darker, more moody colours with glowing yellow lights and hallways of glass, brick, and wood. It may be slightly inspired by bioshock as well. That’s a cool game series thing.
The biggest inspiration is that one abandoned subway station in New York. It would be neat having a city based on that sort of thing.
What is so bad about the shining city’s rule in Hollow Knight: Voidshell? And what is the real plot?
In Voidshell, the most valuable resource is water. Great seas surround the island kingdom, but this water is dangerous. Filled and contaminated with unknown substance that causes a bug to become bitterly ill. This water is extremely difficult to purify. In fact, it’s considered impossible by many of the kingdom’s inhabitants.
The saving grace? The island’s rich supply of its own clean water that pours down from the heavens and fills up the many caverns of the kingdom. Unfortunately, that source is running dry. No new rain has seeped into the cracks for years, and the natural supply of the clean water is slowly starting to diminish as the water cycles through.
The new monarchs have travelled to this island from lands far away, digging through sea and rock to reach this safe haven. At last, they built this massive kingdom in a short period of time, quickly recruiting new bugs also seeking safety and knowledge. This quick production of a new world has created a lot of problems. Firstly, the kingdom was already occupied. Occupied by other great gods and kingdoms. These smaller kingdoms had no choice but to bow down, or suffer and die due to the already short supply of water that previously ravaged their small forces and stressed their power.
The pale kingdom rose to power, with the newly wrangled bugs, the kingdom got to work, tightening the water even further. Diverting it away from Whisplume and the other places.
This is where the prophet comes in. A new prophecy is formed, one describing the fall of a new king from an outsider that was once considered native and powerful. The monarchs hear of this prophecy and freak out. Their kingdom, after all, is the newest, most powerful one. But the problem is, it’s theirs. Nobody else’s. No one could DARE take the throne, nobody WOULD take the throne.
The pure bishop was sure of it. So he designed a plan, something to buckle the knees of every surviving kingdom. And so far, it worked. Until you came along.
With this change to the lore, I think I’m going to redo a few of the areas and add a few new ones to fit the theme and diversify it from silksong a bit more. (I have some ideas… a desert wasteland? A great rocky crown at the top of the island? A landscape devised of ancient structures floating in the sea of darkness and disease? Maybe.)
