I recently had an article published on the R-Urban Wick blog, exploring the usefulness of SuperUse Studio's 'Oogskart' (Harvestmap) web platform to the work I am doing with Public Works and Wick On Wheels, looking at networks of re-use in Hackney Wick.

The National Wood Recycling Centre (NWRC) has a good, no-nonsense definition of social enterprise as applied to the way they operate in the field of community wood recycling:

Community wood recyclers have both environmental and social objectives; we want to do our bit to create a more sustainable society by helping to reduce waste and save resources. We also work for a bit of social justice by helping disadvantaged people; we create work for them - so they can build their confidence and self-esteem and build useful transferable work skills. Of course, we operate like businesses (because we like the idea of having our future in our own hands rather than being decided by the stroke of a funder’s pen), so we do still need to think about the “bottom line” too, and that’s the beauty of social enterprise; it is focussed on delivering outcomes that are beneficial to society, whilst recognising that the best way of achieving those outcomes is by being financially self-reliant.

The RUrban Wick Re-User Guide....

I'm looking for any published resources (print or web-based) that could be termed 'how to' guides on re-using waste materials or 'upcycling' of materials for building with. I'm interested in detailed, material knowledge of re-using materails - down to the nuts ad bolts. literally. I'll start a resource lists below (but please contact me with tip-offs! - twitter, email, comment below...):
