that excerpt from the VM book raised some questions - Tessa says their training atmosphere felt "a little toxic" and that they felt increasingly isolated there. a little bit of poison is still poison. and isolated how? they didn't feel supported the way they did before? partly because Igor left, or because Meryl and Charlie seemed to feel fine but VM didn't? with Marina? before you say yes, of course, Marina, i want to know what this looked like - what were the signs, what did VM see and feel that didn't sit right?
they said Marina didn't "really" have ideas in the spring - so she didn't have strong candidates for an Olympic FD concept/music. that's really dropping the ball when you're coach/choreographer to the defending OGMs. and that Tessa and Scott pitched ideas but Marina gave them a "lukewarm reception." so they weren't waiting for Marina to give them a program - she shot down their ideas without offering solutions of her own, effectively delaying their preparation
VM did also tour that off season- they skated Carmen and Stay in Stars on Ice in April-May. not sure if they did any shows after that, but they wouldn't have been able to train much during that span, which may also have contributed to them still doing choreo in August, according to the show
not sure whether VM were the source of the story that Tessa started to be suspicious of Marina, to lose faith that she was in their corner but that Scott didn't agree. i wonder if this was the cause of their arguments that spring. sounds like Tessa was right to see red flags considering, and that Scott overlooked them or didn't want to see them? or didn't know where they'd go? that leaving might make them even more vulnerable? (also more recently, they said Scott also thought about stopping skating - when was that in this timeline?)
makes sense that having a camera crew there who they liked felt insulating - it also might have felt like insurance to have everything recorded and that people might be on better behavior on camera. i wonder if they thought that, or if it was a side effect. but what a weird situation, and such a sad one for them - to be under crushing pressure, feeling unsupported and also kind of gaslighted, and to still go for it 100% - that's amazing, and they deserved better
looking at Marina in all this, though, i'm not convinced she was trying to sabotage them. there was something strange going on - because how would you not have ideas for your Olympic champions in an Olympic year? or actively engage with them full out until you had something you loved?
the choreo she ended up giving them was gorgeous. it was the music and concept that was limiting. the SD they made was better than DW's. i don't know if Marina knew that the politics weren't going to go VM's way, or if she had more faith in Meryl and Charlie, that it was their turn because they'd been consistent and were on a winning streak?
if she was outright trying to help D/W win, she could have given Tessa and Scott Seasons or something like it from the start and just acted like she was in their corner. but she didn't. there wasn't that kind of duplicity going on. it doesn't quite add up, and i don't know what the answer is
Tell us your favorite parts of the book!

The Thousand Dollar Tan Line: A Bit of Analysis (Part 1)
Keith & Veronica
The tension between Keith and Veronica in The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, for great swaths of it, was one of my favorite bits. The moments when Veronica and Keith's relationship swings wildly out of balance are some of my favorites, because Keith is the most important person in Veronica's life and the person she's least fond of letting down. The book felt like an extended argument from Kanes and Abel's, the:
KEITH: Do you have any idea how dangerous it is, what you're doing?
VERONICA: I'm protecting her so that the Kanes can't get to her and cover up the money trail.
KEITH: Well, who's going to protect you, Veronica?
part. Because throughout the book, that push and pull is on-going.
i finished the ten thousand dollar tan line and i don't know how to feel hm
Is there anything better then staying up late reading?
Just stayed up until 1am so I could finish The Thousand Dollar Tan Line (probably took me in three hours total to read). Really good book and now I just want more! Will attempt to satisfy my VM cravings by rewatching the show and movie…..
Overall, the feeling I have right now is reminding me of when the Harry Potter books came out… that excitement of a new story and new adventures for your beloved characters….and of staying up until you are finished so nothing is spoiled but also because you just can’t put the book down……so I’m feeling a bit nostalgic (and in the mood to re-read the HP books for the thousandth time)
So thank you Rob Thomas for giving me that feeling again :)
