This week I attempted a portrait. This is Robert Mueller, who is currently head of the Special Counsel Investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections. It was was my goal to really capture the determination in his face. I took a photo into illustrator and  started with the basic shape of his face, added lines, wrinkels, and shadowing. Especially the shadowing challenged me because it had to look natural and effortless instead of like he had fallen into a muddy puddle face forward. Also figuring out the right contrasts of the colours was a bit difficult. How dark the lines, the shadows and the highlights have to be, to look realistic.

These are 2 approaches on illustrating a playstation controller. While relying on vectors and textures in illustrator for one of them I chose to use brushes in photoshop for the other one. Both of the methods had their own difficulties. As in for the vector one it was a challenge to bring some life and movement to it, while drawing the other approach in perpective really was a challenge in technique for itself.

Another illustration I did on my drawing tablet. Because I struggled with coming up with ideas on what to draw I just chose to random numbers and looked them up on “PHIL McANDREW'S BIG LIST OF STUFF TO DRAW”. The words I got were “cannibal” and “alien”. So I that’s what I drew.

This time I tried to stick to a very simplified style in shapes as well as in colours. Instead I focused on the composition of the elements. A family trip through “crystal mountains” actually was something I dreamed about some days ago. I like to push myself out of my comfort zone and found that I really enjoy surrealistic colours and content.

This is called “sequential art/drawing”, which means to portray a sequence of things happening. I chose a rather comedic story, which was inspired by the rarely used tennis balls in my room I saw from where I was sitting. For this project I uses graphite, ink and oil pastels. After sketching, I traced the lines with ink, coloured the picture in with oil pastels and after traced the lines one more time. Of this sequence I like the last drawing the most, because of the composition, colours and texture I managed to achieve.
