Thornton (2011) examines how new technologies that visualize the human brain have affected how we understand it. He refers to this concept as the rhetorical brain. This image could get someone to believe an idea without having any hard evidence behind it. This is an example of Thornton’s (2011) idea of a control society and how power comes from establishing norms. He looks at how norms can be established through visual technologies. This video (click here) about the second brain is supposed to get viewers to eat the right thing in order for optimal brain functioning. It is also an example of how control becomes continuous because in order for this video to even be as popular as it is today, there had to be a pre-established notion that brain health is important and it is our responsibility to continuously improve it. Thornton (2011) is critical of the ways popular neuroscience creates ideologies that achieving pre-defined, but constantly changing notions of perfection is up to the individual.

Stabile (1992) analyzes how images have turned the body into a spectacle that can be classified into social hierarchies. In other words, people derive meaning through visual representations of bodies.  Specifically, Stabile (1992) examines how images have changed ideas around fetal autonomy over time. Interpretations of the female body have shifted from women as maternal, reproductive machines to new cultural perspectives. Going even further back, this ideology came from the dominating representation of the male body in visual imagery (Stabile, 1992). I chose this image of Demi Moore because it was very controversial (click here for article) due to the fact that she was naked, and holding her breast to cover it up on the cover of a popular magazine. The fact that this image received worldwide attention reveals how impactful an image can be on people’s cultural values. This image is an example of how we can view the fetus as individual and separate from its mother. The glamour and sexiness of the photo challenged traditional views of a family-oriented mother. Despite the fact that she was representing life, people interpreted the image as inappropriate “for a pregnant woman”. It is photos like these that have played a crucial role in shifting how women and their bodies are viewed in society to a more neutral state while still being able to defend their reproductive rights (Stabile, 1992).
