After the fierce battle of 1757, the French Army lost control of Chandernagore to the British Army under Robert Clive. The 16 guns of the Fort d'Orleans could not match the against the Watson's HMS Kent, HMS Tyger and HMS Salisbury. The French regained control of the town in 1763 only to loose it again to the British government. In 1816, Chandannagar was restored to French and it continued to rule until 1950 when the governance was ceded to India. . . During this period the city lost its charm due to increased impetus of Calcutta as the trading town. The French India tried their best to increase the infrastructure, amenities and facilities but it failed to restore the lost glory. The Sacred Heart Church in the strand area of the the then French Colony still standing tall on the banks of river Ganges, still is a major part of the colonial history. Interior has beautiful stained glasses and walls contain coloured reliefs of Jesus carrying the cross. Long corridors and confession boxes add a dignity to the church interior. The church has been renovated and re-plastered recently. . . It is amusing to believe that every other European countries came to trade in the Indian subcontinent tried to rule the country and extort all the richness. Still today, India remains one of the richest countries during its golden period. The amount of resources the country had was unimaginable during that time and unaccounted for. Though much of the development of the nation came only during the colonial rules. . .
