Dandelion Wine Thursday Night Summer Wine Tasting 7-9pm
GLOU GLOU WITH FIFI
"It's the phenomenon that's sweeping the nation. People are drinking large quantities of delicious wine and they can't stop." -Drinking like Fish: The Rise of Glou-Glou in Europe and Beyond
Glou-Glou is roughly translated as "glug-glug", the sound your throat makes while rapidly consuming a liquid beverage. And the wines in which we're rapidly drinking are reffered to in France as "vin de soif" or "wines of thirst". More often than not, these wines tend to be lighter in alcohol, tannins (for reds) and body, but still have pronounced acidity, minerality and a real sense of terroir, and never heavy, if any, oak. So delicious and easy drinking that you cannot help but drink it in high volumes and more quickly... Our French friend Fifi, formerly of NYC's The Ten Bells, is here tonight to pour us 4 natural glou-glous that he imports from the birthplace of glou glou; FRANCE. And we'll have a couple French cheeses hand-picked by Bedford Cheese Shop and fresh bread from She-Wolf Bakery.
LUCKY YOU! 2016 LAURENT SAILLARD: Laurent Saillard co-founded Ici in Fort Greene, one of the first Brooklyn restaurants to focus on natural wines. Laurent left Brooklyn a few years ago and moved to the Loire to learn how to make the natural wines he’d enjoyed drinking and selling. He began by working in the vineyards for Clos Roche Blanche and Noella Morantin. He continues to work for others during the week and to make his wines on the weekend. We flipped immediately for Laurent's Loire Valley Sauvingnon Blanc, with just a kiss of Chardonnay to round out the edges. Lucky You! is clean, fresh, juicy and plump. Honeysuckle nose and ripe Anjou pears on the palate. Drink chilled with grilled cheesey sandwiches and thank us later. $25
ROUG'É CLAIR 2016 DOMAINE LEDOGAR: Domaine Ledogar's vineyard is managed by brothers Xavier and Mathieu and has been in their family for 3 generations. The estate is located in Corbières and is certified organic. They are devoted to the biodynamic approach and there is absolutely no use of chemicals in the making of their wines. The Cuvée "Roug'é Clair" is a play on the word Clairet which is defined as a wine that is dark pink in style, and may be described as a full bodied rosé. In this case, Carignan, Grenache, and Mourvèdre macerate in the tank for several hours until the desired color comes to life. This wine is such a dark shade of pink that some may consider it a light red. Either way, it should be drunk chilled. This wine sums up the definition of "vin de soif". Light and easy to drink with lots of juicy character. Delicious on its own or with pretty much any damn thing you have laying around to eat. Leftover chinese food? Cold pizza? A bag of peanuts? $20
LE LIT 2016 LA GRANGE AUX BELLES: La Grange Aux Belles was created by Marc Houtin in 2004 - another story of a new career later in life, first looking for vineyards in the Languedoc then finding 9 hectares in Anjou, inspired by Leon Barral in the south and Patrick Baudoin in the Loire. The estate has Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pineau d'Aunis, Gamay, Grolleau and Chenin Blanc, farmed organically of course, using herbal infusions against mildew and vinified with minimal SO2. Short maceratons are practiced here, with minimal extraction, seeking light-bodied aromatic wines, low in tannins and alcohol. According to our sources, they sell out immediately in France, and are in very short supply in NY - we urge you to try them! Nothing says glou glou more than a liter of Gamay! Especially one made with such care. Pop the top and pour. Plenty if wine to go around here... $22
BRISE D'AUNIS 2016 LA GRANGE AUX BELLES: Also from La Grange Aux Belles, we offer you Marc's Pineau d'Aunis. Pineau d'Aunis is an ancient, light varietal from the Loire that is sometimes mistaken for Pinot Noir. We always love to have a Pineau d'Aunis here, but we don't find them all the time, as they aren't very common. The Brise d'Aunis is playfully tagged on the label as, "le vin rouge qui glisse" or "the red wine that glides". Again, light and fresh and easy to drink, but also quite complex with floral and brambly black raspberry notes as well as a dash of white pepper and a bit of earth and funk. There's a long dense and spicy finish that leaves you pleased and wanting more. Just plain delicious. Isn't that why we drink wine? $28
