One of the things I find interesting about tumblr is how the majority of the users have conflated the LGB(T) community and the queer community into a single entity.
The reason I find this interesting is because they are two separate communities, with different histories, different ideologies and different political origins. Additionally, there are very different demographics involved, and in a lot of cases, there are geographical differences as well. There’s a lot of overlap, yes, but that doesn’t mean they’re the same thing.
tumblr, as a whole, has a bad habit of being fast and loose with vocabulary, and if you don’t use language consistently, it tends to change meaning (at least within the sphere of where it is being misused). Especially words that have strong, loaded historical connections to class, race and sexuality.
To make things more confusing, you can belong to one, both or neither community. Like your identity, your community is for you to choose.
Like, in my area, there are two Meet Up Groups. One is for queer wlw and the other is for lesbian wlw. They are different groups, they do different things, they have different demographics. Some people belong to both, some belong to one and I’m sure there’s a lot of wlw in the area that belong to neither. Its an opt-in not an opt-out.
