For the past year or so, i have been less verbal at home than usual. Answering "no", "yes" and not explaining further without prompt and may say "goodbye" when someone says "goodnight" or "hello" to "goodbye". What can i do to improve this? (I am officially dx'ed with "asperger-like" PDD-NOS.)
If you’d like to return to being more verbal (to how you are usually) then first of all it might help to think about why you might have become less verbal. It could be that you’re tired, stressed, particularly distracted by worries or other things you have going on/are thinking about, have depression, a sign of autistic burnout… It could even be lack of practise (caused by previously experiencing one of the above mentioned issues, or just circumstance).Figuring out what the problem is might help you figure out how to deal with it. For example, if you have depression, seeking treatment for that might help. If you realise you’re exhausted/stressed from attending school or work or other places, you might want to think about accommodations that might help ease the exhaustion/stress / think of ways to conserve your energy. If it’s through lack of practise, then gradually increasing the amount of verbalising you do might help. You could practise by:- Reading aloud.- Scripting questions or comments to initiate brief (very brief, if need be) interactions with people you are close to.- Challenging yourself to respond to things more fully where possible or use fillers to give you more time to think about a response (for example, if asked a question, sayig, “Erm,” then pausing to figure out whether yes or no suffices, or whether there’s anything you could add. - Challenging yourself to answer without using the words ‘yes’ or ‘no’, or to use ‘because’ if it would be relevant.
