RWBY VELLA’S ALLUSION
Next for my Team SLVR allusion analysis series is Vella Moisia, a very interesting character I would say. Vella alludes to Vellamo, the Finnish goddess of the sea. She oversees the ocean and represents beauty & grace.
Vellamo wears a blue dress made of sea foam. Vella’s semblance allows her to project blue glyphs that can attract to each other. She can wrap glyphs around her waist like a dress.
Her weapon is a bladed bow that fires bullets. It is named "Chatareus", derived from the scientific name of the largescale archerfish, "Toxotes chatareus". This is a nod to Vellamo, who blessed fisherman who journeyed her waters. The archerfish was specifally chosen because the weapon is part bow, making Vella an "archer".
Vella’s name is derived from Vellamo, as well as being a shortening of the word "Velloa" which means "wave/water movement/billows". Her last name, Moisia, means "extraordinary, wonderful", which could reference Vellamo’s beauty. Vellamo could walk on water. In the Viridian Trailer, Vella is fighting on frozen water. At the end, she slowly walks away into the frozen waves, with wave sounds accompanying her in the background.
Vella has a moon shot in her Trailer. She has a theme of water & waves, which are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon. This ties her into Team SLVR’s moon theme.
And that’s about it. Vella’s beauty & grace merges with her combat abilities to create a unique fighting style, making for an amazing Viridian Trailer.
finnish mythology: vellamo
vellamo is the goddess of water, lakes and seas. vellamo is said to be tall and beautiful, and is much respected by fishermen, who pray to her for good fishing luck. she can also control the winds to help sailors, and she controls the storms and waves. she has magical cows that live on underwater fields. sometimes, during the morning mist, she brings her cows above the surface to eat water hay. vellamo wears a blue dress that is made from sea foam.
finnish goddesses: part two
vellamo is the goddess/mother of water in finnish mythology
she’s described to control waves, winds and storms and if you’re a fisherman you might pray to her for good fishing luck! her hair’s not said to be made out of water to my knowledge but the idea was too good to pass up

Goddess of water, lakes, and seas.
This time I wanted to paint something summery and colorful, and I also wanted to include water/sea as the main theme. This painting is very loosely based on Finnish mythology too, as Vellamo is the goddess of the water, lakes, and seas in Finnish mythology. She is described to be beautiful and wearing a blue dress, so I included the water-inspired color scheme into her outfit, but otherwise made her look more like a mermaid. I really poured my heart into painting this and tried to make everything as beautiful as I could, as I also wanted to paint this as a celebration of the wonderful and rich lifeforms we should protect and treasure, life and diversity that is in danger of destruction if the seas keep warming up. I hope you guys like this and let me know what you think! I am sorry for being so silent for so long, these big detailed paintings take me soooo long!
