today i had a convo with my coworkers who were trying to make me justify why i donāt eat meat or fish. they were saying that even if i care about the animal it doesnāt matter bc its still meat and only food to them. like, i am NEVER one to call out people for eating meat. but i absolutely hate having to justify what i eat or donāt eat. if i said i dont eat dairy thatās fine to people but once it becomes a matter of meat or no meat itās suddenly other peoples issues? this part may seem mean but if u claim to care about animals so much and you donāt want to eat them THEN DONT?!??!!!!! my coworker said āwell i still eat chicken from really bad factories because i donāt have a choiceā iām sorry what?????? u have the financial means so maybe spend a bit more and get the chickens that actually had a fulfilling life then? itās not like someone is forcing u to eat the chicken. i think some people are just insecure so when i bring up my reasons for not eating meat (i feel close with animals and hate to see them suffer, i never really liked fish, i cannot imagine eating meat anymore as its like eating a friend if that makes sense, and partially environmental reasons too) they get defensive about their own eating habits like i did not ask you to justify yourself, you asked ME.
if you eat meat fuck yeah keep doing it if you eat fish fuck yeah keep doing it IM NOT GONNA JUDGE U!!!!!! U can live ur life and i can live mine. but let me live mine in peace before u claim that vegetarians are āannoyingā for trying to āforce their beliefsā on others. ANYWAYYYY
I've been vegetarian for 15 years
Today at lunch, they brought bread to the table while I was in the bathroom
And I LOVE tea so I guess my family ordered me some
I took a sip and it was chicken broth
I took a big sip too because it looked like tea š
I havent had anything with chicken in it for over a decade and I feel grooooooss
So Iām vegetarian, right? Not because of the usual reasons, but because I just... donāt like meat. It feels gross in my mouth and hurts my gums to chew it and I donāt particularly like the flavour. Meat is the shampoo of the food world for me in that it never tastes as good as it smells.
Husband is chill with this. My mother, however, is not, and after she pulled her usual stunts trying to get me to return to her way of thinking (ābut what about protein!ā ever heard of legumes; āwhat about iron deficiency!ā if push comes to shove, I have an iron supplement; ābut you always liked it growing up!ā no, I didnāt, I just didnāt feel like getting hit; āyou just have a dental issue and need to go to the dentist!ā my teeth are perfect, the only cavity I got as an adult was because my tooth cracked and I couldnāt brush inside the crack thank you very fucking much) she changed tactics: but what about husband? What will he eat? Think about ~*~him ~*~ !!!!
And she does this every. time. I tell her what weāre having for supper. She honestly is trying to make me feel like Iām a bad wife because I make vegetarian meals, and acts like Iām starving my husband no matter how many times I tell her: if husband wants to have meat, he can make it to have on the side. He doesnāt mind. Often enough he doesnāt even bother because he had meat with breakfast and lunch, thereās no need to prep meat to go with supper. Besides, itās a lot easier for one of us to make a little portion of meat extra that he can just add than it is for me to have to pick the meat out of my food. Like damn bitch it is not the end of the world quit trying to make us have an argument where there isnāt one.
I'm at my dad's and I don't think they remember I don't eat meat

I literally just heard someone say that I dont eat meat bc it is a trend a lot of girls follow
At my in-laws.
I'm vegetarian.
They know this.
My FIL asked if I wanted chicken.
I said no, thank you, I'm vegetarian.
He said, so you don't even eat chicken.
*slow blink*
So I just learned through a documentary on arte (a French and German TV channel) that salmons eat soy... Like what? I mean not naturally of course but really i was so surprised. I know livestocks eat lot of soy but I didn't know fish ate this too. But people will continue to say that it's me the problem because I eat soy yogurt once in a while since I have trouble digesting cow milk, soy from my own country too... I hate it here
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I didnāt know about salmons, but honestly Iām not surprised. There was that study about how vegans are the most despised group of society, just ahead of drug users (both things say a lot about who we are but okay), and thereās always a lot of glee and vitriol in peopleās attacks against vegans - the main angles being a) vegans donāt give a shit about people because vegetables are basically picked by slaves (which, true - so whatās the solution? not eating any vegetable? and donāt omnivore eat vegetables too?), b) vegans donāt give a shit about people because they buy expensive foreign things like quinoa (which, again - there is a problem there, but then again thereās also a problem with buying strawberries in January and I never hear any shaming or outrage about it) and also c) vegans are somehow destroying the worldās primeval forests all on their own because they live off soy, and 98% of the soy we produce goes directly into their greedy mouths.
Like, for fuckās sake.
I understand some vegans are annoying or sanctimonious or preachy, and I understand some vegans are assholes - youāll find both types in any category of people - but the constant trash and misinformation thatās thrown at vegans...I donāt know. I think that research concluded people want to hate vegans because deep down, they know veganism is the way forward and are fearful of losing something as primal and lizard-brained as their own food preferences. They panic every time a new study says the less meat and dairy you eat, the better you feel, and they panic at those reports pointing at the meat industry and the damages it causes. So they ignore that stuff, and get angry.
But if itās any consolation, the tide is (slowly) turning. Iāve been vegetarian or vegan for most of my life, and itās never been so easy, so widely accepted, and such a fashionable concept as it is now. I can find tofu and recipe books anywhere, school and office cafeterias mostly offer vegetarian or even vegan options (even in France, where a law mandating a vegetarian meal in schools once a week almost caused a general strike because apparently professional cooks need to be specially trained to cook one thing without meat or fish??), and even the most blood-guzzling relatives I have are now mumbling about increasing their intake of green veggies and nutsĀ āfor their healthā. Compare that to my teens, when a school cook once removed the ham from my slice of pizza with his fingers before handing it back to me and people used to sayĀ āDonāt worry, I know youāre vegetarian - I made chicken!ā - itās a completely different world. So letās endure the insults and the ridicule, anon. It wonāt last.
(As for your lactose intolerance - I recently discovered coconut yogurt, and itās really good. Itās not very nutritious, mostly fat and taste, but if you want some variety, I highly recommend it. And of course, goat and sheep yogurt are often an option for people who have trouble with cow products, so if youāre vegetarian you could also try that!)
