what's your favorite thing about the expanse and what makes it different from other shows? :0
*rubs hands together with glee* Ooh, thank you for asking about my new obsession. I’ll try to be brief.
- Diversity - the cast has an equal or at least close to equal representation of women in all walks of life, geniuses, politicians, revolutionaries, and soldiers. The show not only passes the Bechdel but also the POC Bechdel test with flying colors, racial diversity is all over the place and in some refreshingly atypical places as well, like our queen Avasarala, a powerful, older woman politician of color who is seriously one of the most badass characters in the show.
- Excellent writing - Look, sometimes as a writer I listen to shows with my eyes closed just so I can better visualize what the script is really saying, and determine if the actors are just making crappy writing look good, or if it’s the other way around. The writing in The Expanse is consistently top quality, the actors performances excellent as well. The authors of the book also write for the show, which may be why, but I’ve never cringed while watching which is RARE for me.
- Riveting characters and story - kind of self explanatory, all the characters are fascinating, the story does an excellent job keeping up tension and I’ve literally sworn out loud at some twists. They’re not afraid to set up the plot you think is going to happen and then knock it down in favor of a better one. I’d watch a show that can do that in ANY genre, the fact that this is epic sci-fi space opera makes it 1000x better.
(I mean, they got the freakin’ 2004 Punisher to play one of their main characters??)
Also it’s got that one tragic disaster character that I need to fall head over heels. It took me awhile to realize just how much of a tragic disaster he is, but once it hit I fell ass over teakettle in love with the show and now I’m writing fic too and devouring the books (which are slightly different, but book and show do compliment each other) so… yay?
