The hill I am generally willing to die on, to start with a bit of a broader argument, is that Dante is a passive soul, man goes forth in his life by inertia... that being said he immediately gets back in line the moment Vergil pops back in his life: Dante is a satellite, and he orbits around Vergil, the only real pull/spur of his life. And Vergil - he is still in his principles, he stands at the centre of every mess he creates and when he does, it's utterly destructive too. Man is also pretty dramatic.

While Dante hides. It's clear enough in his coping mechanisms, I'd argue the only time he does show himself is in 2, and we see him in all his gloom. Dante ultimately is brought into light only by a force like Vergil, who pulls him out of his shadows and forces him into his rawer self. Vergil is not so fond of masking: it's clear enough in design choices, how he keeps his hair slicked back in a way that shows his face clearly while Dante always has a fringe or bangs covering him. Hairdo aside, just look at their amulets' chains!! Gold for Vergil, silver for Dante.
