“You’re freezing cold” with Keyleth/Vax/Gilmore?
24. "You're freezing cold."
Vox Machina knows that when they get back to Emon, Keyleth and Vax are going to disappear for a while. It's just what they do. The rest of them trudge into Greyskull Keep to eat and rest, sore from whatever misadventure they've just survived, but the resident lovebirds flit off to Abdar's Promenade, to Gilmore's.
They've still got the frost of Issylra on them when they arrive, making a mess of the entrance to the magic shop. Sherri shoos them in, clucking about how they'll scare away customers, and they oblige her. They shuffle through to the magically-enlarged suite that Gilmore calls home, and Vax doesn't even bother to knock before pressing inside.
"Gods above, Sherri, can a man not even eat lunch without—" Shaun cuts himself off when he sees them, grinning sheepishly and soaking wet.
Keyleth waves. "Hi Gil!"
In a flash, they're surrounded in a cloud of pinkish purple magic that ushers them forward unceremoniously. "You're back!" They're delivered to him, and he presses one warm, broad hand to each of their faces. "You're freezing cold. Where in the heavens did you go?"
"Vesper Timberlands," Vax says simply. He shakes like a dog, sending particles of ice flying.
With a snap of Gilmore's fingers, the dark hearth leaps to life with brilliant purple flame. He kisses Keyleth's forehead and slaps Vax's ass. "Go. Sit, get warm."
Dutifully following orders, Vax says, "I heard something about lunch...?"
Shaun rolls his eyes on his way to the kitchen. "It's always one organ or the other with you."
"I didn't hear you complaining the night before we left."
A beautiful charcuterie board floats on a giant spectral hand toward where Keyleth and Vax are stretched out on the floor. "That's because you were using the one I like best."
Keyleth stuffs a fistful of cheese and crackers into her mouth, her skin glowing from both the fire and the banter. "Ge' a 'oom."
Vax immediately sets upon her, pressing a thousand annoying kisses across her face and neck until she's laughing so hard that cracker crumbs spray everywhere. Gil returns with warm cider and glasses and plops onto the couch. He'd missed this, the laughter and the joking and the kisses and the life that these two bring with them. So much darkness they see out in the world, so much death, but they always come back here to remind Gil of all the joy there is in this wide, scary world.
When Keyleth's free of their boyfriend's torment, she sighs and leans against Shaun's leg. "We really did miss you, you know."
He cards his fingers through her lovely hair, careful not to snag his many rings. "I missed you too. I always do." He pauses. "How long do I have you this time?"
Always some great emergency, always a world in need of saving. It's a chore, really, loving heroes like them.
Vax stands from the floor, leans over Gil, and places a long, lingering kiss on his lips. "As long as you'll have us."
Not that big a chore, really. "Forever it is, then."
ok but get out of my HEAD i have also been obsessing over vaxlethmore this week!!! i can't stop thinking about them!!! mostly the way gil and keyleth have to learn how to be in each other's lives in this extremely specific dynamic, because they love each other, and they are devoted to each other, but there is no romance between them. neither of them have ever had that kind of relationship before, and it takes time to work the kinks out. and then there's vax in the middle of it so hopelessly obsessed with the both of them.
Oh my god you're so right!
I think Keyleth is a little nervous about their relationship at first and she doesn't really know how to act around Gilmore. And so she kind of avoids him at first because she's scared of fucking this up. But then Gilmore gets a huge shipment of odd plants for his store and then she truly can't keep her excitement inside.
She's fluttering around and looking at everything and helping Gilmore identify them and Vax is just lingering in the doorway watching Keyleth ramble on and on and Gilmore listening so attentively and taking notes on what she's saying.
Slowly, they get to understand each other more and understand what their relationship is like.
I think Keyleth takes a lot of comfort in Gilmore, he gives amazing hugs and he always has a little project for her to work on when she has nervous hands. Vax comes home and just wants to melt when he sees the two of them cuddled up on the couch together.
He was worried about the two of them getting along and it not being weird, so he's just so fucking happy that they love each other so much.

Day 13 of @fanovember : Polyamorous
Keyleth knows her boyfriend still has a thing for his ex and that's not really an inconvenience for her.
Probably grammar mistakes. Wait for the last line I've been screaming for hours now. Vaxlethmore cause Vax has two hands guys. Super cute. Enjoy.
Critical Role Ship Moodboards: Keyleth/Vax’ildan/Shaun Gilmore
Hi!!! I love your One For Sorrow stories - your writing is incredible!! If you're still doing the Valentine's Day shorts, could I request one for either Perc'ahlia in the M9 (early-ish campaign as I'm still watching it) or anything Gilmore/Vax/Keyleth? Thanks!! <3
Hey anon! Thank you so much, you made my day! <33
This is some Gilmore/Vax/Keyleth, though focused more on Kiki and Gil because I had an Idea and this could be part of a bigger fic! Sorry it's... a lil angsty, because Whoops!
Scanlan has been breathing again for maybe fifteen, twenty minutes when Keyleth finds Gilmore.
“He’s alive again,” she says before he can ask. And then she tosses a tooth on the coffee table.
Gilmore is unusually quiet as he picks it up and turns it over. The root is puckered with craters from Melora’s devouring curse, but the enamel otherwise did a good job of resisting long enough for Keyleth to collect a few handfuls.
“... The groove near the point is intriguing,” Gilmore murmurs. He runs a thumb lightly over the serrated inner edge. Hissing when it cleaves a neat red line in the meat. “Am I to assume the owner was venomous?”
“This was Raishan’s.”
His eyes widen. Which, fair: as stunted as she was from her disease, Raishan was still an ancient green. Was - it feels so good to put her in past tense. She had massive fangs that could fit neatly to Keyleth’s forearm. Those were too big to pry out in a rush. A blessing, then, that the monster had a second set of teeth along the palate.
Mostly used them for talking, until she couldn’t - it was those claws that did the dirty work. It’s those that killed Percy. And Scanlan.
It’s… that’s another thing she can leave behind in the past. Her friends, dead, again.
Which is why she’s here.
“I have seven more,” says Keyleth. “Dragonbone is inherently magical, right? And Raishan could cast, too.”
Gilmore nods. “What are you looking to do with them?”
Keyleth’s chest rattles with her sigh. “I don’t - I don’t know, Gil! Something! She killed them, and everyone keeps dying, and I - I just don’t want it to happen again.” She crumples onto the couch beside him.
Carefully, he loops an arm over her shoulder. Not like she might break, but like she might buck him off. They haven’t had much of a chance to talk, since she and Vax and he and Vax and whatever that made she and he. It was a lot. Everything was a lot. Lots of a lot.
“I’m not quite the person to stay death,” Gilmore hums, a touch wry. “But - hm. I’m pretty sure I can make something of this that can help.”
There’s quiet as, one-handed, he spins the fang. His bloody thumb draws two runes, drafts or ideas maybe, before it tires of bleeding. With his other he rubs soothing circles into Keyleth’s shoulder. It’s nice.
She can’t let it stay nice. Scanlan was dead. Percy was dead. A couple of days ago Scanlan and Vex were dead. And before that Percy was dead. And before that -
“You know - you know -” Keyleth stops herself. It takes a few more passes of Gilmore’s fingers before she finds breath to continue. “Vax and I. I mean - we’re the only ones who haven’t died yet. And I don’t - I don’t know when that luck will run out, Gil.”
“Darling, I doubt the gods themselves could strike you down,” he declares. “As for Vax’ildan…” Now his strokes stutter.
“I’ll get these done.” Promised instead, because they both know what Vax is like. Death dances with him, moth to a flame, forever unclear which is which until something stops moving. Maybe here it’s the light-lustful bug that will snuff out its damnation. Maybe.
Keyleth struggles to swallow. “Thanks, Gil. Do you mind if I just -”
“Not at all,” Gilmore chuckles, and they hug and stare at the tooth. Turning, so slowly, it’s hard not to see the blood far older than the sorcerer’s embedded in its serrations.
(Scanlan, or Percy, or maybe her own?)
