Váthia is the best known castle town of Mani. It was first mentioned in documents in 1571. Towers and tower houses stand side by side and winding lanes thread their way between them. In addition to a church and a square, this village had fortified homes and turrets equipped with tiny windows, loopholes and scalding chutes so it could always be ready for battle at a moment’s notice if an enemy were sighted. It was, in effect, an impenetrable stronghold.

Η Βάθεια αποτελεί χωριό και οχυρωμένο οικισμό του Δημοτικού διαμερίσματος Βάθειας. ο πληθυσμός του οικισμού ήταν 6 κάτοικοι κατα την απογραφή του 2011 ενώ ο πληθυσμός της ευρύτερης κοινότητά ήταν 316 κάτοικοι. Διοικητικά ανήκε στο δήμο Οίτυλου έως το 2011 ενώ με την διοικητική μεταρρύθμιση που επέφερε το Πρόγραμμα «Καλλικράτης» εντάχθηκε στο νέο δήμο Ανατολικής Μάνης. Γεωγραφικά βρίσκεται σε υψόμετρο 174 μέτρων, 7 χιλιόμετρα βόρεια του ακρωτηρίου Ταίναρο.

Vatheia (Greek: Βάθεια [ˈvaθja]; also Vathia) is a village on the Mani Peninsula, in south-eastern Laconia. The local community of Vatheia is named after this village. The aforementioned local community is a subdivision of the municipal unit of Oitylo. It is known for its tower-houses built on a hill dominating the surrounding countryside.On the hills and mountain sides around Vatheia proper are clusters of abandoned houses, towers and chapels known as the perichora, meaning environs. Currently, Vatheia is a tourist attraction during spring and summer due to the abundance of wild flowers that cover the nearby hills and its scenic views. Moreover, it is an iconic example of the south Maniot vernacular architecture as it developed during the 18th and 19th centuries.
