Trying too hard
This wouldn't be a mom blog without a post on potty training. One of many to come, I'm sure. For the past few months I have kept a potty in the bathroom and Amelia has frequently sat on it to read books. I should add that she has done this happily as long as she was fully dressed. The potty makes a great chair. I would remove her clothing in preparation for bath time and then begin my potty pitch with that inevitably conspicuous mom voice: "devi fare pipi?" (do you have to pee?). I rarely managed to convince her to sit that naked tush on the potty. When I did we had mixed successes and I began to realize that she was holding her pee until the moment we gave up and I placed her into the tub. As soon as her toes touched the warm water, she would release. I cheered. I had to. I wanted her to understand the sensation of peeing and make the connection. We have made various attempts at it and although she doesn't seem to mind sitting on the potty to read a book -- she even brings me a book while I sit on the "big" potty next to hers -- she seems to have an aversion to sitting on it with a bare bum. So I've started to wonder if I'm trying too hard. I never wanted to let myself get so caught up in attaining a goal that it became more about me than about guiding her through the process. But those moments creep up on me. I tell myself to chill and just let it be, but then when she's running around naked before her bath I go into some kind of hyper, over-drive and begin the "do you have to pee?, come sit on the potty, get a book for the potty..." I think she can see right through this. Am I trying too hard? Yesterday, during a similar episode she just stood in the bathroom and pooped on the floor. I took that as my answer.
