it isn't 100% perfect but I think I'm suspending further development for the moment so that I can apply my engineering resources to other projects. I found an automatic texture setting I could apply which improves the final quality but doesn't seem to photograph well.

combining vase mode with regular printing
So, I got a little fancy, slicing this print. At first glance, it looks pretty normal, but all that stuff on top is vase mode, while the bottom is a conventional in-fill print. I sliced it with Prusa Slicer… which only allows vase mode over the entire print.
So, the author of the model recommends printing it in regular vase mode, but just setting the bottom to be really thick (effectively making the bottom 100% infill). I thought that was kinda wasteful.
I used a “negative volume” in Slicer to chop off everything but the bottom 6.5 mm, and generated gcode for that. Then, I did the same to generate gcode with the bottom 6.5 mm chopped off. I removed the post-print instructions from the first file and the pre-print instructions from the second file, and just concatenated them together. Voila: pen pineapple apple pen hybrid vase mode!
There was technically a 0.2 mm gap between the last extrusion of the first section and the first extrusion of the second, but it worked out okay. Like, there was no noticeable defect. (To be fair, I print a little over-temperature, and my cooling fan is broken right now. So, those factors definitely also helped close the gap.) If I’d done the math to cut the model between layers, I could have eliminated the gap.
It is possible to achieve an astonishing result by 3D printing in both TPU and TPE in a Vase Mode using a 0.8mm nozzle.
Made myself a spool for vase mode printing cause I can't stand the full 1KG rolls lol. Figured I might as well share in case anyone else feels the same. Plus it's just kinda nice to have extra smaller spools for leftovers regardless. =)
