There was always something lurking in the dark. A phantom, a wraith, a shadow. Twisted, corrupted, deformed horrors that seemed to flicker in and out of the corner of his eye wherever he went. Cosmo had grown used to not reacting. His expression was stoic and apathetic, and he never looked directly at them, certain that if he did they would start looking back. Yet when he saw her, Cosmo was startled. The last time he had seen her, they had been Juniors and the mystery of her whereabouts had left the school and most of the town in an uproar for months.

     It was almost disturbing, how it took her disappearance for people to realize how much there was to say about a single person. Cosmo had never been much of a people person, but Rachel had been different. A chameleon, she swapped skins depending on whoever she was with, charisma pulling people to her the same way Beacon Hills seemed to draw the dead. Cosmo didn’t know if they had been friends — he wouldn’t have known how to ask even if the thought had crossed his mind before she was gone — but her absence had felt like an open wound for months and when he saw her again, or thought he saw her, it was like that wound split right open all over again.

     Cosmo was on her heels in an instant, skateboard abandoned as he reached out and grasped a hold of her arm. There was a terrifying moment between reaching for her and touching her that Cosmo was convinced that his hand would pass right through her. That he was seeing things, that she wasn’t really there at all, but then he closed his fingers around her wrist and pulled her around to face him and . . . it was her.
