@bozarbrussels dedicated a superb exhibition to Bernard van Orley, on view till the 26th of may! Van Orley made the design for the tapestry seen here which is part of a series of seven (collection of the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples), woven by the famous Dermoyen workshop in Brussels between 1525 and 1531. Theme of these seven tapestries is the victory of the Spanish and Imperial forces of Charles V over the French army of Francis I at Pavia in 1525, this particular tapestry depicts the attack on the French camp and flight of the besieged. The battle was part of a series of Italian wars fought between the Kingdom of Aragon/later Spain and France over the preeminence on the Italian peninsula; both the French and Aragonese kings had hereditary claims to the crown of the Kingdom of Naples. After years of battles with ever changing fortunes for both sides, resulting in ever changing allegiances of the Italian states and princes involved, things took a turn for the worse for the French after this pivotal battle. Portrait of an unknown young man from the collection of @kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna that was painted circa 1520 by Bernard van Orley. Van Orley was a sixteenth century artist from Brussels, a true talent of the renaissance in northern Europe who worked as court artist to the Habsburg rulers of the Netherlands. Margaret of Austria by Bernard van Orley and his workshop. This portrait from @monasterebrou shows Margaret as a devout widow. She lost her mother Mary of Burgundy at a very young age, was engaged to but later discarded by Charles VIII of France, lost her first husband Juan Prince of Asturias after only six months of mariage and her second husband Philibert II of Savoy passed away at the tender age of 24. A young Charles V painted by Bernard van Orley shortly after 1516. Born in 1500 in Ghent Charles grew up in the Burgundian Netherlands with his aunt Margaret of Austria. As a member of the illustrious houses of Valois-Burgundy (father Philip the Fair), Habsburg (father and grandfather Maximilian I of Austria) and Trastámara (mother Joanna of Castile) at a young age he inherited the Burgundian lands, later adding the crowns of Castile and Aragon to his resume and finally the title of Holy Roman Emperor.
