the potential to be | PATRICK VAN AANHOLT
As Sunderlands latest ‘s-Hertogenbosch-bred acquisition observed his surroundings at their EUFA five star certified Academy of Light, he recalled a memorable vision of colour. It was only seven month earlier when Patrick John Miguel van Aanholt supported the flattening of Eredivisie ‘red and whites’ PSV Eindhoven, chalking up a brace of assists and a goal in SBV Vitesse’s 2-6 drubbing at the Philips Stadion. Van Aanholt sealed that game over an impressive season. At his new club on Wearside he had but one important quote to offer supporters.
“I want to show everybody...,” he began; recalling his veiled career from the unfamiliar SV OSC ’45 and FC Den Bosch, local recognition the PSV and Chelsea academies, and sporadic awareness at the established Coventry City, Newcastle United, Leicester City and Wigan Athletic. As a journeyman loanee of 6 years, van Aanholt was rarely afforded the opportunity to lay his personal foundation stone on the grand stage of the Premier League. At Chelsea he was a fatality of the omnipotent, exceptional talent of Ashley Cole.
“...what kind of player I am...,” the 23-year old Dutchman continued, alluding to the gen known by Eredivisie supports. His two-year loan stint at Vitesse offered bracing insight. His pace, peerless; his evasion exceptional, his distribution dictating – van Aanholt was an opportunistic radical at the GelreDome. His 2013/14 form compelled Louis van Gaal to submit the left-back into the provisional Netherlands squad. His technique was desirable for the technically-suited Eredivisie. Van Aanholt was predictable for intense, powerhouse sprints into attacking positions and being a vital conduit of the aggressive and counter-attacking methods, albeit to the nuisance of his defensive duties.
Not that this should inconvenience the Wearside faithful. At £1.5m, Sunderland have snipped an international full-back to their inventory on a four-year contract. Whether van Aanholt can translate his Eredivisie form is all potential to be yet comparing him to Marcos Alonso is realistic. Alonso had an aesthetically regular half-term with the Black Cats yet statistically he was subtly remarkable. For the paradigm in practice under Head Coach Gus Poyet, van Aanholt may find his possession play – superior to Alonso – apt. His pass accuracy beats Alonso 85 % to 71%, with his goal-creating supply rate marginally finer due to his alertness to provide – and successfully create – more assists. The Dutch international’s 42% shot accuracy parallels his Spanish predecessor but a superior goal haul is consequential to van Aanholt’s versatile balance of box-shots and long-rangers, with ambidextrous shooting. A case can be made that van Aanholt’s stamina is lacking, that has caused him to suffer with a faulty deep-laying interception rate. It shows that on occasion the Dutchman can be too far forward to sustain his primary directive in his own box. However in terms of precision, van Aanholt makes up for substandard quantity in tackles with a much superior 59% to 52% tackling accuracy than Marcos Alonso, with 62-to-59% over the AFC Fiorentina wing-back for successful take-ons. It is evident that Sunderlands (eventual) full-time left back embodied a greater pace than those before him, is an intoxicating attacking threat with potential for Poyet to work with and show, as van Aanholt concludes: “...what I am capable of doing.”
