Varian was fiddling with his hands while Rapunzel brushed his hair. Again. He and Altair had been planning this day for almost a year now. Heâd feel better if he could see his fiance, his soon-to-be-husband, but it was known to be bad luck if you see the âbrideâ before the ceremony. He knew that none of them actually believed that nonsense, but Mia had been firm: Letâs not take any chances. He looked out the window, the Moon full and bright, not a cloud in the sky. A perfect night for a wedding.
He sighed for the fifth time tonight. âYou okay, Mijo?â His mom asked him, looking up from helping Maddy with the flowers in her hair. âYeah. Just nervous, thatâs all.â He assured her. âWell, everyone gets Wedding Day Jitters. Trust me, I know.â Rapunzel giggled, remembering just how nervous she was when she and Eugene got married.
âThere!â Mia exclaimed as she finished pinning the flower to Maddyâs hair. She pulled out the hand mirror to show her. Maddy gasped and giggled. âMia, it looks amazing! Thank you!â She said as she admired the flower in her dark brown hair, her chocolate eyes sparkling.
Mia snorted at the girlâs enthusiasm. âNo problem, Maddy.â Just then, there was a knock at the door. She went to the door and looked through the peep-hole. âWho is it?â Vega asked. âAltair.â Mia answered, opening the door away from Varian and making sure to crack it. âHey, Al. Something wrong?â She asked him.
Altair shook her his. âNo, but I had something I wanted to give Varian that I found.â As he said this, he took something out of his pocket and began fiddling with it. âOh! Okay. Hold a second.â She closed the door and motioned for Varian to come to the door. She opened a door all the way, keping the other closed. He got up and put his back to a door, Altair doing the same on the other side.
âSo, what did you wanna give me?â Varian asked, nervously tapping his finger against the wood. Altair looked at the object and sighed through his nose. He simply passed him the object without sneaking a peak, no matter how hard he wanted to.
Varian held the small object in his hands, confusion written all over his face. It was a blue hair clip in the shape of a dove, no bigger than his palm. Mia glimpsed it and gasped. âHowâŠ.?â She muttered. âI found while looking for looking for Eugeneâs belt. When I showed it to your dad, he said it belonged to your mom.â This time, it was Varian that gasped, tears collecting in his eyes. He didnât remember his mother. He only knew what she looked like based on the portrait in Dadâs room, knew her personality based on the stories Dad and Mia used to tell.
He choked back a sob, tears slowly cascading down his cheeks. âI thought you could wear it in your hair, so that your mom could be with us on our Special Day.â Varian was quietly sobbing now. âThank you.â He managed to get out through his cries. Keeping his eyes closed, Altair went around the door and, with Vegaâs help, hugged Varian. At feeling strong, warm arms around him, Varian managed to weakly return the gesture. They stayed there a moment, the only thing that could be heard was Varianâs crying. When they finally let go, eyes still shut tight, Altair felt his way to wiping Varâs cheeks of his tears, kissing his eyelid instead of his forehead. âI donât think that was your forehead.â Varian chuckled, his voice a little raw from crying. âThat wasnât.â âOh well then. I love you, Varian.â Varian smiled at his Love, even though he couldn't see it. âI love you too.â Sweet Jesus, was that cute. Selina, what are you doing to us?
As he walked away, Mia reached out and put an arm on his shoulders. He turned to her, having opened his eyes and sure that he wouldnât be able to see Varian, to his slight dismay. He just wanted to see his fiance, dang it. âThank you.â He heard her say, even though the words could be barely heard. Altair noticed there was tears that seemed to create a kaleidoscope in her blue eyes. He nodded and smiled at her, then turned and walked off.
She sniffed and wiped her eyes. She went back and saw the girls had managed to calm Varian down some. Rapunzel was leading him to the bed and sat him down, wiping a tear and hugging him. He sniffed, clearing his throat when his eyes caught Miaâs. She smiled softly at him.
Altair had taken to pacing the altar. It had been about two hours since he gave Varian the hair clip, and his pre-wedding jitters were beginning to get to him. Again. He was dressed in a black suit and bow tie, with a white boutonniere in the breast pocket. The King glanced at him, chuckling to himself. The Procession had started five minutes ago, and already were half the guests situated and seated. The Moon was still full and bright in the sky, the stars dotting the black and blue cosmos.
Eugene smiled to himself. âSquirt, stop pacing. Youâll wear down the altar.â He said jokingly. Altair stopped and sighed. âIâm just nervous, thatâs all.â Eugene sighed. âCan I give you some advice?â âSure.â âStop thinking of it as a ceremony. Think of it as an official declaration that proves just how much you love him.â Altair smiled at him.
The fanfare began to play and everyone got into place. Single file, the Bridesmaids, or in this case, the Groomsmaids, walked down the aisle. Queen Arianna, Princess Rapunzel, Cassandra, Maddy, and Vega, each wearing a pale blue gown, took their places at the altar, then waited for the Ring Bearer and the Flower Girls/Animals.
Lance walked down the aisle next, wearing a light purple suit similar to Eugeneâs, a velvet pillow with gold trimmings carrying the rings, glinting in the light of the Moon. Then came Red and Angry, invited by Lance and Eugene. Red looks quite happy as she sprinkled flower petals on the aisle floor in preparation for the arrival of the âBride.â Ruddiger rested on her shoulders, helping her getting spots on her part of the aisle that she missed. Angry walked beside her, looking less pleased about being forced to wear a dress, but she did as Eugene asked, which was to spread flower petals on the aisle floor. Pascal sat atop her shoulders, as Ruddiger did to Red, helping her.
Mia had set herself a little ways next to the altar, the orchestra behind her, setting up their instruments. She sighed and proceeded to sing.
Canât say how the days will unfold,
Canât change what the future may hold.
But I want you in it, every hour, every minute.
While she sang, Varian was revealed, wearing a white tux with the blue hair clip in his hair. Altair smiled a his groom, canât believing that this was actually happening. Varianâs face was pink, making his freckles pop out, and the light of the Moon seemed to make his light blue eyes shine. The guests stood as his father proceeded to walk his son down the aisle.
This world can race by far too fast,
Hard to see while itâs all flying past.
But itâs clear, when youâre standing her now,
I am meant to be wherever you are, next to me.
As the two men walked to the altar, a woman materialized on a roof nearby, the ceremony and the shadows hiding her. She smiled, her blue eyes sparkling. Luna waved her hand and another woman appeared next to her, her red hair in a bun, her pale blue eyes mirrored those of her sonâs. The two women watched from a distance.
All I wanna do,
Is come runnin' home to you,
Come runnin' home to you.
And all my life I promise to,
Keep runnin' home to you,
Keep runnin' home to you.
The two men made to where Altair and King Fredric were standing, Varian handing his bouquet to Rapunzel. Quirin hugged his son. âI wish your mother could see this.â He told him. Varian smiled at his dad. âShe is.â With that, Quirin smiled at his child and went to his place up front. âPlease be seated.â Everyone not on the altar sat down at the Kingâs request. âDearly beloved, we are gathered here today not just to celebrate a union between two lovers, but to celebrate two families coming together.â He began, his regal voice echoing through the clearing.
âEach of you are here to offer your love and support of these two gentlemen, who share the truest love Iâve seen in many, many years. As their lives come together tonight, so do their dearest family and friends in one of the most important days of their lives. So we thank you for coming.â He paused. âMarriage is a very special time for a human soul. Nothing can create marriage, only you and the one you love can. Through love and patience, dedication and perseverance, helping and supporting, which is exactly what these two have showed everyday for years, without any sign of either of them stopping.â
âWhat a single ceremony can do will never be the same as the love that these two gentlemen share.â He paused again to rest his throat. He doesnât remember the last time he got so emotional officiating a wedding. Oh wait, yes he does. It was Maria and Quirinâs wedding. âIf anyone objects the union between these two, speak now or forever hold your peace.â And he meant forever.
âWe have now reached the point where the Groom and Groom exchange vows. Before you do, I ask you this - Never forget that love, rooted in faith, trust, and acceptance, will be the foundation of a healthy and deepening relationship. No other hugs are more tender, no other vows are more sacred than the ones you are about to share. Try to keep the vows you take out of love and the desire to be loved by someone who matters the most. If you do this, your lives will be endless in joy and laughter, as everyone here hopes it to be. You may now read your vows.â
The grooms faced each other, holding hands. Varian started. âI promise to love and care for you, and I will try in every way to be worthy of your love. I will always be honest with you, kind, patient and forgiving. I promise to try to be on time. But most of all, I promise to be a true and loyal friend to you. I love you.â When he finished, Altair was blushing a dark red. It took a moment before he could find his voice to say his vows.
âI promise to your lover, companion and friend. Your partner in parenthood, your ally in conflict, your greatest fan and toughest adversary, your comrade in adventure, your student and your teacher, your consolation in disappointment, your accomplice in mischief. This is my sacred vow to you, my equal in all things. All things.â
Varian was smiling at him and blushing like mad. It was so plain to see that they just as much in love as when they first announced their love to each other. âMay I have the rings, please?â Fredric asked Lance, who stepped forward, holding the pillow out in front of them. The rings were simple golden bands with with elegant silver trimmings. Each boy took a ring, waiting for Fredricâs instructions.
âPlease repeat after me: I give you this ring, as a symbol of my love and friendship, of respect and appreciation, of a choice to keep running home to you everyday for the rest of my life.â They each said this, the both of them meaning every word of it. When Altair slipped his ring on Varianâs finger on top of his engagement ring, Fredric closed his book, satisfied with this happily ever after. âBy the power vested in me and the hope that your love will triumph when all else fails, I now pronounce you husband and husband. You may kiss as married.â Upon hearing these words, the two kissed their most passionate kiss in all their years of courting. The crowd stood up and cheered. When their kiss broke, it was as if nothing else in the world mattered. They were together and would be for the rest of their lives. And nothing was going to change that.
Taking back his bouquet from Punzie, Varian and Altair ran down the aisle and onto the beach, where a boat sat waiting to take them on their honeymoon. Remembering something, Varian stopped halfway up the steps. âWhat?â His husband asked him. âI almost forgot.â He looked behind him, smirking. The girls were on the beach. He faced forward and tossed the bouquet. The bundle of flowers flew through the air before landing gracefully in the waiting arms of Vega. Maddy giggled and hooked her arm with Vegaâs, her face pink. Vega smiled at her girlfriend, kissing her cheek.
Everyone waved goodbye to them as they boarded the boat. The newlyweds waved back as the ship began to depart. The last thing they saw as the boat drifted away was Varian and Altairâs second kiss as a married couple.
When the ceremony was done, and the Newlyweds were far from sight, the woman with red hair turned to the Goddess. âThank you, Mâlady.â She said, grateful. Luna smiled at her. âI thought you like to see your son get married to the love of his life, Maria.â Maria smiled back. âYes. Very much so.â The two women looked to the Moon and the stars, quite anxious to see what future awaits them all. But for now, the stars twinkled and shone in celebration.
